Getting a bit hot...

Post by skellyjohn » Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:45 am

Since Dan put on a new exhaust for me - janspeed - i've noticed that the bulkhead behind me is red hot in places.

So... do i need to replace the heat shield stuff - looks a pain in the arse - or is it best to put something round the manifold - lagging or something?

As I'm not good with a spanner, the easiest fix would suit me best.

Chances of it going up in flames if I leave it as it is?

Get a heat sheild of some sort fitted, either a crappy lotus fiberglass and cardboard effort of I made one form B&Q ali plate roughly bent into shape. The insulation is mostly made fomr foam rubber so could melt....

exhaust wrapping the manifold would be a good idea too, but you'd need to get the manifold off first, and that's not the easiest of jobs for the non technically minded (me). You'll need to get the undertray off, loosen off the manifold - flexi bolts at the flange (potential for them snapping off) then undoing the manifold at the head and dropping it down, lifting it through the engine bay.

Mine is heat wrapped, I wouldn't bother....

It's a right faff and you'll have fiber glass splinters for months.
Infact you will have splinters for longer then the heat wrap lasts.

I painted my wrap with exhaust paint which took a week to dry which seems to have held it together for now. But there are bits falling apart too.

Ali heatshield is the way forward! :thumbsup

Fashion something out of this stuff:

You want at least something that is the shape of the original crappy heatshield and make sure you get something between the exhaust #1 primary and the alternator, otherwise you'll end up replacing them more frequentiy than you would like.

Cheers,

If heat wrapping, you need to make sure that you don't miss any... as it can have the effect of heating up an exposed part even more and causing hotspots (not a good idea with a plastic car).

The part which is wrapped isn't able to dissipate the heat so effectively, so the part that is bare ends up getting hotter as it tries to dissipate from that small point... or so the theory goes when I was reading about kit-car building. Think that can also lead to cracks etc..

Andy.

PS... that may all be a load of cobblers, and I may have dreamed that I read about it in a previous life.

Get some heatshielding pronto. Jedi Master say to me recently "The bulkhead becoming hot you do not want, no. This a sure way to accelerate expensive repair, yes. This you must do before you can complete your training, my young paduan"

Thank you for all your suggestions. As I'm light years away from being a Jedi with a spanner, can anybody recommend somewhere - West Coast - that could do the job.
It's my birthday in a couple of weeks and I might get some tools to add to my limited toolbox of 3 screwdrivers (2 flat & 1 star), plyers and a saw.

Does the heat shield / wrap stuff they use in motorsport, (bandage type stuff to wrap around manifold / exhaust ) any use for reducing heat soak in an elise? :?

It just moves the hot spot backwards and an cause localised overheating and uneven heating. Says the man with a heat wrapped 4-2-1.

How come Richard can say that in 1 sentence, but it took me 2 paragraphs to try and get that out, and I still wasn't as clear....

 I don't understand long words. It makes life simpler.

If you wrap it then do a good job and paint it with high temp paint. (But please for the love of god don't bother)

However the first time you go out after wrapping/painting please go somewhere quiet. The almigty column of smoke coming off my exhaust looked like I was on fire and I had several offers to call the fire brigde... Stinks like a wet sheep too :sheeplove (May be a plus for some but not me!)
