Refurbing wishbones ?

Post by Sanjøy » Sun Apr 22, 2007 6:38 pm

IIRC Uldis and someone else had a bash at this any tips / comments ? When workign on the car yesterday it did make me shiver looking at the state of the them.
Is it a car os getting them off, wirebrush attachment and then hammerite them ?

How about bead blasting etc ?

At what point do they become dangerously corroded ?

Hammerite won't last long, need powder coating really I would think.

its just surface grot, wouldn't worry for the next 20 or so years.

IMO, refurb would have to be off car plastic media blast, followed by a heavy grit blast and powder coat to be worthwile. Probably ITRO £15-20 a wishbone.

I would not bother with removing the rust,.. but I'm sure removing the mole grips would tidy things up a bit  :thumbsup

I had mine shot blasted then just painted and they come up like brand new. It was a mate that did for me and he charged me 60 quid so not out of it. Trouble is he needed them for a few days so you need to do without your car.

That was one of the things I wanted to do to my car. A whole suspension refurb, same thinking, don't like rust.

There are two ways IMO, sandblast and powder coat (needs removal) or wirebrush, rust inhibitor and rust chassis paint (can be done in place).
Can't find the links now, but somebody in the UK does a very good rust cleaning dip and following paint that supposedly stays forever on.

Not sure which way I'm going yet. Guess it depends if I remove/change the balljoints (which are perfectly good, but in my line of work you change things that are perfectly good BECAUSE you don't want any failure).

Frosts do something called POR15 which is supposed to be very good. Not cheap though!

Be fair rich  The car was in a million bits at the time!
PS Just been checking for as show blaster and sealey sells one for £60. Still you need a big compresser and sand, gauntlet gloves are not included. Still its quite reasonable.
