Clicky gear box

Post by gorrie » Tue May 22, 2007 12:36 pm

Gear changes are fine, however in the last few weeks I've started hearing a metalic 'clicking' sound when changing sometimes.

Seems to be coming from directly beneath the gear stick. In fact, if I have it in neutral and wiggle the stick left to right it clicks away. Is this normal... or is it perhaps a gear linkage fouling on the undertray?

If the latter... is it something I should get MMC to look at (ie, will the linkage fail over time with the friction?)... or is there an easy way for me to check?

It doesn't seem to be hampering gear changes though..

Cheers guys..

Check the linkage at the back (undertray off) - you're looking to make sure both clips are in place and that the various wobbly bits at the back aren't loose - easiest if you get someone else to wiggle the stick while you look.

You can also remove the gearstick cowling to have a look see if the noise is coming from in there.

Cheers,
Robin

Robin,

I noticed while changing the oil at the weekend that there is a bit of play in mine at the "engine" end (the two rubber boots). Whats the best way to sort it - just get the upgraded linkage from eliseparts?

JJ,

I found the linkage kit wasn't really needed (of course not until after I'd bought it).

There was a guy who sold only upgraded bushes for a few quid - might be worth seeing if he is still around (unless of course your linkage is u/s too).

He was on P/H and E-Bay for a while but it was a year or 2 ago now.

Mine seems to have play at the "selector shaft lever" and in the same bit on the other side where it is green. Is that the bushes Derek that are replaceable?

In the eliseparts kit it looks like part number 7 that you replace, whereas my "play" is elsewhere....

Part No 7 is the linkage part, but the kit also includes the bushes at Selector Shaft Lever and just above point 5 in your pic.

May be worth an email to Geary to see if you can just get the bushes.

In my case, I fitted only the bushes as the linkage was fine, and I think the linkage is now fitted to Shug's car.

Thanks Robin... think I'll check under the cowling 1st. May be something simple. Only really seems clicky when going 'side-to-side'.

Not had any need to take the undertray off as yet... may need to watch for falling gravel after my excursion at KH last week.

The pic I posted, whilst also being a blatant hijack ( ) also gives you an idea of what could be clicking, but I would guess once the trays are off and you get someone to move the gearstick it will be easier to trace.
