Coolant doesn't all boil, just locally around hotspots.

I'm just thinking that 1ml of water produces 1l of steam so if you have it boiling then the pressures will fairly mount up If memory serves me right you need to be 120C+ for it to boil.

But I would imagine that surface temps of the liners could reach that. I don't understand how boiling coolant can affect the head.

Boiling can cause* oxidisation. (pitting) of the head as far as I am aware the shim helps reduce that :?.

*cause is a harsh word it's more like creates ideal conditions metals oxidize faster in hot water.

It's the air bubbles letting the temp rise locally and preventing cooling

If you made it super super clean and used distiled super clean water you wouldn't get any bubbles and you could super heat the water without it boiling, but that may be difficult

Preventing HGF.....

buy a VX

Seriously though, keeping an eye on these threads now since I have a VVC in the family :( albeit not in a Lotus  The one we bought had in May, at a cost of £1700, a spanking new cylinder head fitted with the LR gasket & steel dowels after valve guides had fallen out :o

I have had 2 1.4's and never had any trouble, my parents 1.6 (although I think that is stroked not bored) went through 2 gaskets before rover replaced the whole engine on warrenty :D, my sister's bf had his head gasket done on his freelander and my elise has had it done. but I know 3 ppl with 1.8's in 75's/Zt with no problem, a freelander with PRRT (when he bought it he got the dealer to fit it for free) no probs I don't think they are as bad as everyone makes out, as long as you warm them up and fit a PRRT and maybe even an electric water pump that works on a timer once the engine has been switched off.

I have skimmed quite a lot of ecotec heads as well, they are not without failure, they just dont get driven as hard

They are looked after better by the cast iron block.

Only the lardy turbos have a cast iron block though... the 2.2 is alloy
