Gareth,
If you are getting a woosh woosh grinding noise from the front then it could be a stone caught in the alloy splash shield at the back of the disks. If you reverse it should clear this.
Re the back caliper. Take out one or both pads and see if you can slide it back and forward (pull & push). If you can't then do as Shug says and lube it up best to take out the slider bolts and smother them in copperslip (old school) or silicone grease.

If you need to change the rear pads I have a wind back tool for the rear piston, drop me a pm and I'll send it to you in the post. if you need it.
