Are you still getting air in the system?

DO you have an old style pipe over the exhaust manifold?

I had this problem it was the bleed screw thread was worn in the ali pipe, a load of PTFE tape fixed it. Bled it time and time again until I found that one. It was only a slight leak and it was still pressurising, but when it all cooled it sucked in a load of air overnight.

post a pic of how its fitted
mine is fitted as per photo

Image

the blue hose is the oil/water cooler fitted on a T to the head ,the straight on the T goes to the other sill pipe
with the branch off going to the old thermostat conection

Image

thats before t bods fitted but shows the oil/water cooler conection to the head
I had to change the sill hose and fit the lower / later water pipe from a scrapper

Hello chaps

Just back in from my evening bleeding session.....

took a rake of photos but they are frankly rubbish.

Just to check...I'll describe the installation as best as I can. Basically as per this:

http://web.tiscali.it/elise_s1/index.htm

cream bottle sitting pretty much vertical.

1) bottom connection on bottle to LHS sill hose
2) top connection on bottle to tee. tee straight through goes directly to block, tee leg goes back down to bottom ally pipe (later lower type).
3) bottle angled connection goes straight to coolant rail (the one with the bleed screw).

Rich...I had a good look at the bleed screw on the coolant rail & it looks like it's ok.. I couldn't swear on the front hose one but if I'm kind of figuring that if I can get it to behave properly when it's hot that'll be a start.

One thing I did notice tonight as it was warming up was that the fans were cutting in when the radiator wasn't hot (it was warm but no way up at 88 )..... also when fannying with the radiator bleed screw I squeezed the hose just to see if it would move any thing and it sounded & felt like it was full of air.

I've convinced myself there is a slug of air in the in the lhs hose back to the engine (pretty specific eh :) )

So rigged up a bit of hose and a plug, opened the front bleed screw and blew into the resevoir (until I burst a vein in my left eye).

I now have lot of coolant on my garage floor and no change...

Will maybe start loosening jubilee clips here & there looking for air at high points next.

can't help but think I'm missing something obvious.

any thoughts?

Have you stuck an eszibleed on the expansion tank yet? A couple of PSI means that you don't get scalded....

Update...

Session one.... took out jiggle valve fitting, had a look at it & put it back.....I didn't see what difference removing the ball bearing would make and I'm loathed to change any more until I've got the air.
Bled it a bit more, conclusion.......made no difference what so ever.
Fans still cut in before radiator is hot and then eventually sits with the fans on with temp around 100.

Session two....Bought a new cap....barsteward my £30 bike shop pump c/w gauge and fitted it to the old cap (with internals removed). Filled up the bottle, stuck 1bar in there with the bike pump, and opened the front bleed nipple. Did this a few times resulting in a further 3 litres of coolant on the garage floor. Conclusion.....made no difference at all. :(

Last night session 3.....jacked up drivers side of car a little bit (enough to get the radiator at an angle but still maintaining the coolant bottle above everything) Carefully undid rhs hose connection to radiator & got a bunch of air out.. conclusion...halle fookin luiah.
Now car behaves as it should ie when up to temp at idle fan cuts in and out keeping temp between 88 & 100.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.....and relax.......

What a pain in the chuf that was.
