Modern AC systems in cars are quite complex and self protecting, ie. they will not run if they could damage themselves, there will be an ECU controlling the aircon and you need to determine why this won't run the compressor, generally you'd have to pull the fault codes from it . . . simply regassing it without knowing that's what's wrong is just a waste of money . . . you then need to understand what sensors can be replaced, where they are and whether replacing them breaches the refrigerant circuit or not, etc, etc, etc

In short, unless you have the skills to self diagnose, you'll probably have to take it to someone who does, I'd also suggest KwikFit would be a long way down my list of candidates . . . probably lower than selling the car . . .

My Audi aircon stopped working the other month, was a simple sensor failure, 15 quid and 20 minutes to fix, but without the tools to pull the diagnostics data from the aircon ECU, I would have had no chance . . . it was even possible to change it without losing refrigerant . . .

I'd guess MMC or an aircon specialist (yell.com) would be your only chances . . .

So is the general concensus that getting the 40 quid Halfords kit and recharging it would be a waste of time? I'd take it down to Ali or MMC but it's a long drive

That would be a waste of time, and IMO dubious from a legal standing.

Refrigerant gas cannot be added to a system without a leak first having being found and repaired. (though cars might be different)

A specialist who does car air-con should check to see if there is gas in the system and if not pressure test the system to find where the leak is, then a re-charge process can be gone through.

As FD has said, it may not be needing gas.

I thought you had to be a refrigeration engineer to do that stuff

Looks like this could be a case of TADTS! I got mine recharged and it worked for a couple of hours.... I've now found an air con specialist up here but havent had time to take it in yet

I've spoken to Ali and he says the pipes often crack (if not fixed previously by lotus) and will need fixed.....he reckons the pipes themselves will cost around £150 plus labour........great news since I'm just out of warranty!
A batch recall by lotus would have been nice!
