what ever works for you , given that aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat , would it matter what you heat?
Also the expansion rate of alloy is higher than steel so does the alloy not 'move away' from the steel? you could argue that if you could only heat the bolt it would expand the alloy hole and perhaps 'stretch ' it, if thats the case the the same heat would transfer into the alloy very quickly and as it expands quicker than steel :?
anyway what ever happens what we do know is that its the best way to get the bolts out intact.

yeah in aberdeen, using the gun would make it almost impossible to just heat the bolt, ain't tried it yet though, will be tonight before the cursing recommences :D

Yeah, really has to be a Torch.

I don't have one set up in the Garage at the moment, take it to your local garage and ask them to do it but better keep an eye on them.

I do have a compressor and a good air gun if you want to use it.

Its not in Aberdeen, Central belt. Im going there on Sunday to have a word with him. Its a homer £1100 all in (Burnt Orange) so will ask him if he is up for doing another if you want.
