Belt looks ok, and no loose or missing bolts, so fingers crossed the problem is not in here.

You only need to take the undertray off to check it . . . they make a ticking noise sometimes when loose, eventually ending in catastrophic failure . . . put it on drive on ramps, in 5th gear with a helper in the car pushing the footbrake and check the bolt . . . if it's not that then great . . . if it is then you're living on borrowed time at best . . . you can do it on a jack if you're feeling wreckless . . . I tightened one up a KH for someone that way . . .

must read posts properly....you said Crank...I read Cam...easy mistake when you are looking at a photo of cam pulleys.

Crank pulley is the one that drives the alternator, right?

Correct, the one that drives the alternator - as Fd says, if the pulley has been running loose you must replace the bolt - it should be at 220Nm IIRC - more than 200 anyway - the pulley is very heavy and if it's been riding loose on the bolt, it will have been hammering it; sooner or later the bolt will fail.

Cheers,
Robin

Yup, I actually tightened that bolt on that car at KH last year after the crank pully fell off in the pitlane...
(rattle and alt light at the hairpin and managed to dive in!)
One nice chap (Stan Bernard's mechanic) cut down a socket for me. :thumbsup

...different engine though so can't be my dodgy spannering. :D

I had what sounds like a similar problem a few years ago, with a horrible intermittant engine noise which came and went and seemed to be rev related. After a little investigation, it turned out to be the alloy spark plug cover which was not bolted down tight enough. The bolts needed to warm up enough to stretch and the rattle started.

Worth a check if you've not already thought of it.

Is it the noise the stereo makes when turned down?
