It wasn't exactly a mint engine and box and that shell was ripe to say the least!

Good clean one way engineering fun! Watching Dom "Engineer" the rad surround with a pickaxe was interesting and it will take a while for my arm hairs to grow back...

Fook knows how you will ever get it back into a car though

Top tip for all, when removing a stright 6 from a BMW, cut the wings above the front wheels, tie the engine block to a sturdy tree and drag the shell off the engine. we could have saved about 3 hours if we had thought of this first.... BMWs are well built!

Yes it was "theraputic" Dom was itching to smash the windows with the forks to pick it up but he didn't want to have to clean up afterwards!

We angle ground the engine mounts off the engine (They bolt on to the block, so not that bad) and I chopped the rad surround out with a hacksaw. Then a combination of Shug on the crane, Dom in the forks and me with my trusty bit of scaff the dam thing popped out... It's bloody huge and stoopidly heavy! Funny thing was the gear lever came out with the box too. we suspect that the leather gaiter may well have been hindering the whole operation. Bloody BMWs....

Richard, as you have the throttle body off at the mo, could you measure the size of the hole that there is for the air to go through in the manifold. Asking as I have the 56mm thottle body ready to go on mine, might need to open up as discussed before.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Done already, just forgot to post it  the inlet is 57mm so no porting required. However while you are in there I would give it all a good going over with some carb cleaner, it's really manky in there with soot. Espcially the IACV. You will need a set of 6 point star key things to get it off, but I would do it to stop it blocking for good...

Head is under assembly at the moment, however I have hit a slight problem... My valve spring compressor is too short to clear the side of the head! I got the valves out with a socket but there isn't enough room to get in to put the collets in....

There is a bigger compressor in Halfrauds but it's another £40. Does anyone have one I can borrow for a day? Or any better ideas?

Hi Richard,

If you're any good with a welder you could extend your existing valve spring compressor. It wouldn't take much.

With reference to the VVC plenum. It will give you a little extra peak power (depending on other specs) but there is a drop in mid-range torque. This won't be significant if you're using a long primary 4-2-1 manifold but if you still have the stock manifold you need all the mid-range torque you can get.

The plan will be for a small bore janspeed, will this offset the loss?

Got a bigger problem, I have got 8 valves in on 1 and 4 so I thought I would check and assembled the cam ladder but some of the valves don't sit on their seats! I have checked the service manual and everythig is within tolerance....

The cams are the same "closed" diameter as the other set I have and the valve height is correct from the spring seat, any thoughts? The lifters came from a low port head, does anyone know if they are different?

Appaently the lifters pump themselves up if lft out. That's what DVA says anyway so it must be true....! He says wait till morning and they will have recovered....

Fingers crossed then!

Just bodged the head back together with a suitably sized socket. Thanks anyway (Impetuous? Me? ) Found a better size to last time as it slipped nicely into the follower bore. Just waiting for the followers to contract (With some luck!) the it will go for another wash with trike (Tri-cloroethelene) to ensure everything is nice and clean (And wash off all the vaseline!) then I'll seal the cam ladder.

The shopping list will then be:

Verniers (4 mil :thumbsup)
Head gasket
New cam oil seals (Old ones fitted ATM)
cam cover gasket (Does anyone have a cam cover they don't need? It's the one bit of head I haven't got!)
Cambelt (Worth going for a piper?)
Tensioner (does it matter what sort I go for sa long sa it matches the tensioner?)
Cheap oil for a flush
Coolant
Decent oil for refill

Have I forgotton anything?

You'll need to time in the verniers Paul Thin has my gauges set up
The new belt needs to match the tensioner, if you have a choice go manual
The piper belt is wider and so matches the width of the pulleys
Use an anaerobic sealer so any excess remains liquid
Don't change the colour of your antifreeze
