I think you'd be easier taking the battery out of the car, it's really only a 2 min job.
Keep it nice and cosy in the house and charge if needed...

Bear in mind that the central locking and manual locks on post -04 Elises are completely unconnected; if the door is locked with the central locking and the battery goes flat, you'll need to open the boot, jump the battery (the alarm will sound), then unlock the door with the plip....

I don't hold much hope for my VX battery. It will have been sat for 3 months in a mates garage by the time I get home. Bugger......

Hahahahaha.

Took me and my partner 25 minutes to change the one in my S1, and even then we ended up dropping a spanner to permanently live underneath the battery.

I can't see it doable in 2 minutes unless you a) really don't want any skin on your knuckles and b) don't care about breaking the radiator trim.
My car? Oh, it's the little yellow thing over there.

In an S2 the battery lives in the boot so it is a very easy to remove, just remember to connect it up correctly when you replace it.

Funnily enough, that's what I'd intended to do, until I read some posts about the battery being tricky to remove! However, in hindsight they might have been referring to an S1 battery. Thanks for posting and putting me right.

OK, thanks for posting – certainly useful to know!

Cool, thanks for the info.

I take it the alarm can be disabled prior to battery removal, to prevent it sounding when the battery is removed and refitted? (I'd consult the manual, but it's in the boot and the car cover is a bugger to remove and refit).

Thanks again!

Wee update...

Car hasn't moved since this thread was started, but I disconnected the battery last week, in order to stop the alarm from intermittently sounding:
http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/vie ... =5&t=32411

Then today, as the weather forecast is milder and I hope to take the car out for a drive soon, I decided to remove the cover and reconnect the battery. Car started perfectly, didn't even labour turning over 8)

So the empirical answer to the question seems to be:
  • For at least two weeks, the battery will hold a charge strong enough to start the engine (bearing in mind that it was disconnected for around 60% of that period).
  • The alarm might start complaining much sooner! (have to assume that the cold spell didn't help and caused a bit of a voltage drop).
Cheers.

Have done my S1 and Erica's VX a couple of times now, the trick is to use a belt (or buy a battery with a handle!)

Battery with handle is a couple of minute job. Use the washer bottle to hold the bonnet open, disconnect / remove holding bracket and lift out (with 2nd person helping to move the loom).

The Vx battery doesn't actualy fit out (or the loom doesn't move enough) so the handle is pretty useless as you need to rotate the battery in!

I use the belt from my jeans, buckle it and use it as a long handle to lift out / lower in the battry :thumbsup

all that said, last week, I just hooked up a charger with the battery in position. Much easier!

i was washing the car the other day and had the radio on with the sounds turned up nice and high to be able to hear outside, for an hour or so+ think i also had the ignition turned on....big mistake as i went to start ...no go!! .....managed to leave the car for a while and tried again and luckily there was enough to get her started

I wont be doing that again!

Just to update this thread, the VX turned a wheel for the first time in 2.5 weeks this morning.

Alarm was off and a £20 solar trickle charger from Maplin was connected.

Did it have a handle?

Had the battery in and out of mine countless times, never had any hassle.
