If the turbo has variable veins like my TDi Golf the same thing can happen when they soot up... Wife used to use the car round the town, take car on motorway and under load on a slight incline limp home mode :( a quick flick on anf off with the key would reset fo a short time.... How ever when I started to use the car for commuting and it was driven at higher revs the problem cured itself with a wholsome kicking daily... never had an issue with her since :) That said the same issue on my previous Bora needed a new turbo as it was too far gone lol
