Graeme's version is inspiring.

Robins is accessible.

Both great - thanks!

I will let you know which James prefers.

So. Can it be said that gears will affect applied torque, but not power? Or is torque actually applied power.

Shall I start a new thread (sorry OP!)

Power = Torque x RPM

If, by selecting a lower gear, you pedal twice as fast but press the pedal half as hard then your power conversion rate will be identical as it was in the higher gear.

Typical gear boxes/pulleys are torque multipliers and RPM dividers. They convert torque in inverse proportion to RPM - so if you get one third the RPM out then you must also get three times the torque out - so power conversion rate at input is identical to at output (ignoring such things as friction and noise which "waste" power).

Cheers,
Robin

Lap of the ring and the acceleration sounds ferocious compared to standard.

graeme wrote:If you want something to move, you need to shove it. You can either shove something very hard, once, or you can shove it lots of times but not so hard.

Torque is how hard you shove.
RPM is how many times you can shove.
Power is the product of the two. More power is either shoving harder or shoving more times.

Cars are shoved by engines.

Golf balls are shoved by golf bats, swung by people in silly jumpers (presumably for increased thermal efficiency, and to weaken opponents with uncontrollable laughter).

If Campbell hits his golf ball 400 yards in one swing, he has lots of torque. But he can only do that once per hour because it takes a whole hour to walk 400 yards when you're 50 years old like Campbell.
James isn't as strong as his dad, and can only hit his golf ball 100 yards. BUT, he is young and his knees still work, so he's much faster. James can run ahead and hit his ball again another 100 yards, and another 100, and another 100 before Campbell catches up.

James has a quarter of the hitting power (torque), but can apply it four times as often (four times the RPM) and they both end up at the 400 yards mark in the same time. Both have output the same power.

However, James will expend more energy over the whole day because he has to walk home from the golf field because there are two sets of Golf clubs in the pax seat of the S1, because Campbell still can't admit he's going to sell UJI and keep the Evora. Fisiks = applied man maths.

Hope this is useful.

:D

OK so from the above we can deduct that Campbell is old and wears silly jumpers?
