:ROFL . . . . You never know!!

Steve, I don't think it's water. It started working again today after I washed the car! Unless water *helps* the motor to work!?!

It might, if the wiring or contacts inside the motor are broken...

In saying that, I'm no electrical genius. Whilst at college, my physics lecturer described wiring as "containing smoke" and said that it was bad if any escaped...
Best Regards,

Steve.

Ali, funnily enough, there was a burny smell from my heater this morning too. Going to get it booked in asap!

Guess what went today on my 11 month old Elise... no3 speed of the blower! No2 is just a wee bit better than No1! For the last few weeks it's been a bit noisy but usuable.... today after switching off and starting... nowt... though 1 and 2 came back a short time later.

I have emailed MMC... wonder if they will call back within timescale I asked? (By midday Monday).

They managed to order the fan motor in a couple of days for me. Getting it fitted on Friday/Saturday this week.

Sounds like it's a pretty common problem!

Yep - had mine done in March after the fan motor failed in January (jeez that was a cold winter).

Both you and Ali have had the same symptoms burning smell / intermittent operation) - this is a clam off job in an S2.

Ask if the new fan blower motor is protected from the damp.

get it done before the winter !!!

Hmm. Deeply suspicious. First of all it *cannot* be the resistors themselves. Any one of these failing would remove one motor speed but not all of them. Also intermittent failure would be unlikely.

The original S2 blower motor had a problem that the fan blade could foul the cowling and would blow "snow" in through the vents (where the snow was molten plastic off the fan blades).

If Ali get's a burning smell that could imply the motor is stalled and overheating - perhaps because the fan blade is locked against something - or it could be the fan blade itself burning as it rubs against the cowling.

Rather than just replace the motor and resistor pack someone should diagnose what is actually failing, because assuming they're replacing like for like and given that we have at least 3 or 4 similar failures on this list, it will surely fail again.

BTW, on my old S1 it was clear that the cowling had cracked, perhaps from impact damage when a previous owner off roaded it :-)

The mass of the motor is suspended on the end of the cowling with no metal support - heavy impacts and track use will put a lot of stress on the cowling and might well cause it to crack or deform - once it does that, the fan blade can get jammed.

At least one of you could ask to see the removed fan unit to see if there is any evidence of cracking of deformation.

Cheers,
Robin

Well MMC called at exactly midday... am surprised. New heater blower on order. They will call back when part is available. They confirmed they have had a few replacements and that it is a clam off job.

I spoke to John at MMC at lunchtime. He commented that they've been doing loads of these recently, so I think we definitely need to get to the bottom of it!

Having watched the making of the Elise video I suspect Lotus had two choices of fan . A quality Lucas type item as used on all Honda and will last forever costing £5 ,or the Sheng Ping fan as used on all hand held fans available from your local car boot sale costing 86p. Guess which one they picked ?

I think the fan is fine, it's the cowling that's broken. Not sure the source of the two, but wouldn't be surprised if they are not designed for one another, or if they are, there is some other part that is used to brace the motor that is not present on the elise.

It's one part I am surprised no one has done an aftermarket upgrade for. You could imagine a fan twice as powerful (no doubt made out of CF and alu) which could double up as an electric super charger :-)
