My header tank looked similar and I ended up having an oil to coolant leak as Robin described. The gunk in the header tank was the only sign, no overheating, no gunk under the oil filler cap. Before getting my HG replaced I did remove the tank (drained it with a syringe) then washed out with hot water and Fairy and replaced and topped back up. I did then find the residue slowly returning and there was a slight oily smell after it had been run so did a home gas test and confirmed. Fingers crossed it's not a HGF but if it is and this is the only sign, at least it's likely you caught it before it did any further damage.

Thanks for the info, been on the phone to Craig and Calum so will be dropping it off with them post SIDC next month for some diagnosis.

Removed the scum this morning so will take it for a run tomorrow and see if it comes back, but tbh, it was more sludge than foam..... not looking good.

If it is the worst case scenario it may be a chance to release a few more ponies, if I was looking for a silver lining.

Just to update, looks like it was indeed signs of early HGF :(

Craig is currently working his magic on it and looks to have been caught early enough to not be too serious.

The root cause of the elastomer failure might be hard to identify; first time around if there is nothing obvious I would just replace and move on. You should measure the liner heights, simply because you are there, but probably do nothing about them unless very bad. But if it fails again ... well, there are as many theories as there are web sites dedicated to the K-series engine on how you should/could fix it ...

Cheers,
Robin

Unless an installation is coming in around 3k these days then no ;)

I actually like the k, it has a bit of character. Just a shame it's character is jekyll and Hyde ;)

With mine being a 160. I'm kind of stuck with the k unless I want to change the nature of the car completely, if you know what I mean. Dom is some the same with a 135.

I do, I wouldn't want to change either of those!

With mine being a run of the mill 118bhp there is nothing sacred about it. It's more I like the K's nature and the lack of funds to drop a honda in :D
