There's loads of paranoia on seloc about cam belt failures.

it's not a hard DIY job really - just set aside an afternoon and take off the wheel and arch liner - sorted!

yeah, interesting vid, seeing it done on a bench. i've had one of these completely apart at college including timing belt off and on. i wouldn't want to try it on my elise though, partly because access is such bit*h, but also i don't trust myself enough yet...

Only difficult bit is getting the bottom pulley off. Its usually a bit of a bar steward. I find that 6 feet of scaffold pole on the end of a breakers bar does the job although old torquey will be going into retirement since somebody generous bought his old man a compressor for charismas.

Never done the Liz but have done two MGF’s and a 216 while attending to HGF. Sunday afternoon fun.

thanks for the offer mate, but I'm going to keep the service record up at the moment, as I'm gonna be a student for the next 4 years and may have to sell at some point.
You can keep the service book up to date no bother. Just get a postman pat home postoffice stamper kit and stamp the book. Who's going to be checking on page 17 of the service history and then even if they do, the brain is a funny old thing and it would go "Postman Pat - yeah that'll be that garage down in Norwich" ...

Also the thrill of wondering whether the engine will grenade when the timing belt comes off because you forgot to use threadlock on all the bolts is worth the hassle of doing it :-)

Cheers,
Robin

yeah, you're right. the pully bolt is the difficult bit. I had to use my wifes socket set (with the smaller drive [is it 1/4"??]) and bought a long arm from halfrauds.
the only problem is that there was NO way a torque wrench was going to fit in there, so i had to guess the tightening torque. - i bit worried about that but i'm absolutely sure i havn't UNDER torqued it! - i guess i'll find out next time i try to get it off!!

definately worth getting the wee jobber that holds your two cam gears in place, though. i improvised with a bit of wood, but it slipped, causing some concern!!! - elise parts sell them for a few quid.
