Inlet Camshaft gear bolt Sheared!!! [update]
had someone round today looking at it and is going to price up parts for me next week.
Then going to take car round to his garage and he's going to strip engine down. He asked me if i wanted to get my hands dirty and work on engine with him to save any money...
I need new camshaft pulleys for a start...
While i have the engine in pieces, is it worth doing any other upgrades that wont need to change the ECU?

How much time do you have (i.e. can you afford for the head to be sent away, and can you wait for some new cams to come back?). I'll have the same cams that are fitted to DDtBs car back before the end of August. If you want the head fettled I would recommend sending it to kiwirog *BUT* he's on holiday and has a bit of a backlog. If you want something sooner than that, DVA keeps heads in stock (I think!) on a p/x basis, so you could swap heads.
To keep the MEMS you want nothing hotter than 270s (these days known as 633 grind I think) and I would suggest bigger inlet valves and chamber reshape, mild skim, mild porting. DVA has a kit that includes verniers too IIRC.
Cheers,
Robin

Robin,
many thanks for your generousity again. Are those DVA kits ont he pricey side or am i just being a tight barstardo?
Im not in any real rush to be honest as its a 2nd car, but i would like to try and get some sun licked driving in again before the frost arrives.
What would it cost to send head away for work?
Rich,
Did you do most of yours yourself? only asking as you say yourself you are a self-procraimed ebay bitch
Nizzy,
you can have the pulleys mate - thanks for the shout anyway.

All DIY, not difficult but time consuming. Read alot, then read some more, the tooling is simple but it took me months to get the porting finished.
All I really did was clean up the rover casting and make sure everything matched up, ports, valve seats, etc. Also I ground the valve guides back to the port wall which was controversial, several people say it is a vary bad idea, several said its not. It seems to work and doesn't use any oil yet. The valves were new pattern parts (£8 per set of 8!) and the rest was all 2nd hand.
Find a nice old head casting off a 1.4 (Make sure its a high port, if you don't know what that means you need to do more reading!) they are cheap as chips but identical to the 1.6 and 1.8 heads. Plus the older castings are reported to be better quality and less porous. The head currently fitted to my car is a high port 1.4 that cost £30 including p&p.
I will try and get your cover posted, I just keep forgetting
I'll chuck the pulleys in the box FOC if you want. let me know if your still interested.

Is your car a VVC??
How far are you going to "STRIP" the engine,as it may be worth while getting me to measure up the liner heights, and decking the block if required.
If it is VVC then it does limit what you can do,you can fit a modified exh cam if you want.Is it the inlet,or exh cam that you have the problem with?

Whats the modification to the exhaust cam?
its the front inlet camshaft timing gear bolt that sheared which obviously gave a bit of play to the gear - although was held in place by the plastic cam cover. There's slight damage to the gear where it has been banging against the bolt remains. Best to get it replaced.
The head came off on thursday - I have 6 bent exhaust valves and all other damage was saved by me dipping the clutch and pulling over as soon as I felt things were not right.
going round to see it on monday night for a nosey
