Heat shield

Post by robin » Mon Apr 10, 2006 8:43 pm

Shugster,

Your heatshield is looking a bit sus. When mine went like this in due course the heat burned through that silver paper rubber bulkhead liner and set fire to the bulkhead itself (right next to the petrol tank :-)) - luckily it never really caught (something to do with all the clothes wedged behind the seats starving it of O2 I think :-)). New ones from Lotus are pretty expensive (order 100 quid) so you may want to make something else up instead ....

There is already a plan in place for the heat shield replacement, Shug had a bit of what looked like dimpled tinplate to make a replacement from. That original one is comprehesibly feckked! :)

Have a word with Uldis, he made a new heatshield (and bulkhead liner I think...)

Cheers,

Dimpled tinplate my arse! It's a sheet of that fancy heatshield material Demon Thieves will fleece you mucho moola for. Has just been 'liberated' from another vehicle, that's why it looks a little rough...

Am also planning to properly connect my vent pipe (have had some ally ducting from the RHS intake pointing at the alt since I put the 421 manifold on it) and make that area a haven of cool air (ish)

Update - Nearly there!

Okay first in this update is the wiring loom. Basically, the stock VVC uses an different ECU to the standard K, which features 2 K style plugs. To use the Emerald, you have to rewire them into a single plug. This isn't as bad as it seems, because a) they don't use every connector in each plug and b) the design of the plug means you can simply push out the pins, complete with cable attached and waterproof boots in place.

To make it easy (because I had several plugs and lots of cable available) I first put placeholder tails in place and marked them up with pin numbers. Basically this meant that I simply went through the sheet listing what pin went where and pulled the appropriate marker out, replacing with the correct pin from the loom. Kept me organised and it turned a possible nightmare job into a fairly easy, methodical process.

Marker tails in place

Finished loom - not pretty, because you're taking cables from 2 plugs into one and the wire lengths vary. It should work fine though <crosses>

Image

This is the loom in place at the top of the engine - a whole pile of stuff you never see if you've not got the VVC mechs (2 x VVC actuator cables, VVC sensor cable, plus the unused IACV plug and MAP sensor plug)

Image

Next, I finished the plumbing - should work fine. Heres come pics - first showing the T-piece under the cooler (feed to engine from stat not connected):

Image

With everything connected, it's a little neat - but nothing rubbing too badly. I've taken the precaution of fitting a stiffer engine steady bar, to avoid any issues with the restricted movement of the cooler:

Other wee job was the repair to the heat shield:

Should do the job. 8)

The only other photo I have is the old hub not, which required drilling and splitting - after David tried heat, an inch-drive air gun and 4 feet of scaff pole....

Next to the new one for comparison....

So - the engine is in - shafts and hubs are on. I'm awaiting delivery of the freshly re-programmed Emerald and then we will fill the fluids and try for the first start! Hopefully the next update will come with video of it running....
