when are you planning this and would you mind if I came along to watch/help lift things, I won't take offence if you say no.

Hey there's a queue ;-)

I have noticed Robin likes to work alone. Or maybe it's my ineptitude he is trying to avoid...!

When the time comes that I have all the bits and I think I know what goes where, I'm sure we can have a block raising party :-)

Block Party, LOL. They have one of those at Disney Hollywood Studios, it's their Toy Story feature parade :-)

One quick question, can anybody recommend some good books to read about engine rebuilds, something to pass the time in airports and flights while actually learning something useful.

Thanks

Hye Giles

Hope you are well.

There was a Landy specialist who was selling brand new crated engines for about £1800 or so the last time I looked, which must have been 12 months or so ago.

No idea what i did with the link though, but might be worth a trawl. I think it may even have become a thread on here a while back.

The Rover K Series engine manual.

Dave Andrews' pages.

A Haynes manual for a K-series Rover, e.g. Rover 25 - assuming your car is S2 then you'll want the 99- manual not the -99 manual. I've no idea how much detail will be in here but it may help to demystify some of the gobble-de-gook in the Rover manual :-)

The K is different from many engines, so not sure that a generic book on engine rebuilding will help all that much.

I think that the main challenges are:

Block is decked w.r.t. the liners you'll use,
Crank and rods are still in-spec relative to their markings (all the crank and big end bearings are graded on the crank, block and rods so that you select the correct bearings, however if any part has worn to outside of its grade limits then that will be the wrong bearing!), Selecting the correct bearings
Torquing things up properly.

Cheers,
Robin

Really? I've always found it a refreshing good manual.

Agree with the rest though. :)

Hi Andy, well and happily working from hom for a few days, I'll try Landy people, however, I'm sort of sold on Robins suggestions for the rebuild, I should end up with a decent engine and a lot more know how.

Dreadnought garage in Callander should know a thing or two about K series too. A bit more local than Dave Andrews, but not sure how forthcoming they'd be with tech knowledge - they are a commercial outfit after all.

Thanks Robin, right now I'm just trying to get a feel for the work, a bit of light reading before I plan to start work in a couple of months or so could be interesting and/or useful.

LOL. I had to hunt a bit to find the evidence.

But it's a fair cop :-)

Never had a single regret. What's not to like.

PS - If Kiwirog was certain he could achieve this with the 1.6 Toyota 1ZR-FAE without the MIL light getting upset, then I would be in serious trouble. UJI really comes alive at 4krpm, as per the graph of torque, and this suits a lazy TDI guy like me :-) However we had a chat and he is not sure, and I've not tried very hard to source a trial 1ZR-FAE head for him to experiment with as yet.
