Don't need mole grips - they should rotate with hand pressure. Get on your knees, grab the bar and try to twist it - shouldn't rattle, but should twist a little on the balljoints smoothly and relatively easily.

Tried this tonight but couldn't get much leverage on it (offside). Didn't feel any movement so I'm thinking just get them changed. To be honest I've been drivin it very gently as its now in the back of my mind so think I'll get it booked in to MMC asap to get them replaced for the standard items as they seem the best option for how I'll be using the car.

Better to put your mind at rest. That way you can enjoy driving it.
If you're not living on the edge you're wasting too much space!
