Thanks, a few good reports always give me a better feeling before I part with real cash.Rich H wrote:Deroure are great for parts, not always the cheapest but pretty close for OE parts.
Ordered loads for the Esprit from them mostly because of the linked parts catalogue.
Customer service is pretty good too.
Where for a new K series

Re: Where for a new K series
Thanks Campbell, could be interesting, I'll have a wee look, the good point is I'm in no rush for the bits, the car will be off the road for as long as it takes.campbell wrote:Pentland Land Rover have provided me with some useful standard bits, as have Pentland Components (no relation!) in Sighthill (branches elsewhere too).
PLR have moved from base at Craiglockhart to the "motor village" or whatever it's called, at Newbridge off M8 / M9 underpass junc.
Re: Where for a new K series
Can anyone help here, these two are on the PTP website, the MLS Elise gasket is Multi Layer Steel and the MLS Landrover gasket is Multi Layer Shimmied, they both seem to be improvements on the original, but are they the sam thing, just different names, or even typo, would they be good for the standard K Series re-build, any thoughts would be apprciated.
Thanks
Giles

It is often said that the original is just fine.
I've had two of them.
The first one didn't fail.
The second one hasn't so far...

I believe they're the same thing and share the same Payne part number if OE spec.
Various schools of thought on which gasket is best, but I'll be using an MLS when I rebuilt mine soon. I've always just picked mine up at PartCo, who were a good bit cheaper for the full, OE spec, kit.
Re: Where for a new K series
I should add. It is also often said that the more important aspect is to ensure you are using the metal dowels provided with the gasket. IIRC...

This, and of course ensure that the liners protrude enough.
On that note, who are able to supply new liners? I thought DVA sold them, but cannot see them listed?
Re: Where for a new K series
The liners standing pround will be sorted, Deroure still list the liners on their website:woody wrote:campbell wrote:I should add. It is also often said that the more important aspect is to ensure you are using the metal dowels provided with the gasket. IIRC...

Beware there are masses of cheap chinese non OE spec parts for K out there now
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT RETAIL OUTLET, OR ELISE/SHIMMED FITMENT, THE ONLY THING THAT IS IMPORTANT IS THAT PAYENNE IS WRITTEN ON THE PACKAGING, anything else is rubbish.
MLS works with proper standproud, but will leak until the engine has seen 2/3 heat cycles, and the coatings have cured, old elastomer needs 4 thou standproud but is more tolerant [ie next failure will take longer] if you do not deck the block. All engines with either gasket need the 82deg PRT,
however these are just sticking plasters.......the solution to HGF is the above plus proper water pump and significant changes to water flow management in the block. aka K series thread
Re: Where for a new K series
Well, decked my block last night, should have 7 thou standproud.... initial checks suggest I do, and evenly, but it was past midnight and my vernier height stick isn't the best, so have a bit more checking to do.
From what I remember reading, Goateaz (sp?) manufactured liners are OE?
I know you intend it to be in the other thread, but if you don't mind, what pump do you reccomend (I see Eliseparts do a pump that looks better?) and are there any mods to the block I can do at this point, save for closing the deck and all that entails (though I do see you are pointing down that road as the ultimate HGF fix).
Thanks.

deck to 4 thou only, - get Stu to help out
Goetze are the parent company to Payen, but the right gaskets, elastomer or MLS all have Payen written on them or come in an OE Landrover box
There is no commercially available effective water pump.....
Re: Where for a new K series
What about an electric water pump?
S2 Elise (cobalt blue with stripes) - toy spec
Caterham 7 - hillclimb spec
Yamaha Thundercat - 2 wheeled toy spec

they don't pump enough pressure...... full stop.
Re: Where for a new K series
Before I start taking too many bits off the car, I have a quick question, would people recommend draining the oil before I start, and would it be a good idea to use any cleaning agent in the oil before I drain it, my concern is that I would need to run the engine up to temperature and then drain the oil, and it would stay hot with no new oil added, should I worry about this, obviously I don't intend to run the engine with no oil in it, or would it be better to just drain out what ever will drip out from a cold engine.
Thanks
