Noise from the top end (been and gone)

Post by jj » Mon Sep 03, 2007 9:56 pm

After a bit of deaTh tonight, I was cruising at about 30mph and when under 2k rpm could hear a noise. Sounded like the chain on a bike when pedalling backwards.

It did it when standing, and with engine cover open and pulling the TBs open it was definatel coming from the top. It still did it when we left helensburgh, but had stopped by the time I got home.

Oil was checked and is fine.

Reason to be worried, or only worry if it comes back?

jj, ive been thinking about this.....

I think it's your VHPD stopwatch - it comes with every VHPD engine but you've probably never noticed it until now. It'll keep going tick tick tick tick tick.... until it just...... stops.....

Maybe the tappets loosening up along with the wheel nuts ;)

Cheers,

Steve

My VHPD stopwatch was only reset about 2k miles ago so it should be fine for a while

VHPD engines have mechanical followers I think? If so they'll make a noise when cold until the clearances reduce slightly as the tappets expand.

However, a common ticking source is the charcoal canister, assuming it still has one :-)

Inside the airbox, there are little set screws that bolt the trumpets in place. After redoing Scotys C's old engine we had a ticking coming from what we thought was the top end, turned out to these screws had slackened and the whole trumpet was vibrating. I know its a long shot but better than the alternatives.
