Post by phraze » Mon Sep 17, 2007 9:52 pm

hi there,
just wondering how difficult (or easy) fitting post purchase mods like induction kits is...we are thinking that if we go ahead and get an elise we may well add bits on in the months and years to come...are there specialist garages that can help around edinburgh or does everyone do it themselves or go to mmc?
thanks for any info

Very easy.... if you can boil a kettle, then someone on here will probly pop round and fit it.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

oh yeah, they're very easy to fit. In fact, if you pay for the ticket, I'd even fly to Scotland to install it for you

Seriously, it is dead easy to install a Hurricane. Most work is to remove the old airbox which is fitted to the side bar with a small bolt in a rubber grommet. Once you've got the old one out, the Hurricane will be in place in minutes  :)

yeah shoomer that is an idea, just not sure how we would finance that...there seem to be some good finance deals with lotus at the moment that would keep our monthly payment to a resonable level...

Apparently induction kits are not a good idea on the new S2 111R...is this true? Something about the throttle-by-wire and the engine management system...

should we be thinking about a sports exhaust rather than an induction kit?

Yes. Don't fit one on a drive-by-wire car. It'll play havoc with it!

I had a Hurricane Induction Kit on my 111R (non DBW) but didn't fit it to my new Exige for this exact reason. Bigrichi is currently enjoying the noise on his car now! :D

As mentioned on your other post, go for a 2bular exhaust: http://www.2bular.com/ I've just ordered mine. Used to have a 7x16" on my Elise 111R. Sounded great. Gone for a 6x18" on the Exige, with extended tailpipes. Can't wait to hear it!

Once I fitted the 2bular to the Elise, the sound of the induction was kind of lost anyway. You'll enjoy the sound of the exhaust more anyway!

erm... we have NEVER had any complaints from any customer about a Hurricane on a drive-by-wire car.

I don't know who told you this, but it seems someone has once again heard something and thought it woud be valid for all kits around.

In fact, the Hurricane kit has been changed ever since the Yota powered cars with the airflow sensor came out to prevent any problems...

I know there are other kits which have problems though..

Yvo, I had a few MIL light problems with the Hurricane on my non-DBW Toyota engined car. Thankfully, it reset itself most times and didn't cause any further problems, but it does indeed cause problems with the airflow sensor. (and yes, it was fitted correctly and everything checked for tightness, etc). Some people get problems, some don't . . .

I've been told that the DBW is even more sensitive and it can cause a lot of problems. This has came from a dealer, Lotus themselves and I'm sure I've also heard this from one of our resident jedi masters, Robin (who I actually trust more than the dealers or even Lotus themselves!).

If Phraze wants to try it, then fair enough, that's his decision. He's got both sides of the debate now - one side from what Lotus have told him and one from the person who makes/sells Hurricanes - so it's up to him to make the choice. I just wasn't willing to risk it and I'm happy to just have some more exhaust noise and not bother with induction.

Perhaps you could donate him a Hurricane for testing? If it works and doesn't cause any problems, he pays you for it. If it causes problems, you take it back without payment and cover any dealer costs he has for resetting his ECU/MIL light! :thumbsup :D That'll end the debate and ensure we can advise people in future when we have physical evidence of whether it works or not.

No need to test as we've supplied Hurricane's to a large number of DBW cars already.
I agree on your 'some cause problems, some don't' this is even confirmed by Lotus themselves, who don't know what causes the problems.
In fact, some cause problems using the original airbox!!!

What a surprise 8)

Did the dealer tell you exactly which error message was on the MIL testing gadget?

And did the system you had on your car had the red nose cone?

I've no idea why this causes problems with some cars but not others. I've had a hurricane fitted for many months now on my '06 spec DBW 111R and not had a single problem, not even a flicker of a warning light. Ah bo****ks, having said that bet it won't start in the morning now.

I love the hurricane. I can get noise when I want it and quieter cruising when I want that (I spend a lot of time on motorways). My first Elise had a ??? exhaust which sounded great but would make your ears bleed on a long run.

When I bought mine from Geary he said if I had problems I was to send it back with all packaging and he would refund it. Not needed to and still loving it. But I might just be lucky :?
