EXIGE THROTTLE BODIES ON VVC ENGINE...

Post by Gaz-M » Wed Oct 10, 2007 11:00 am

Hi folks, i have an Elise VVC powered Metro GTI track/ race car and im going to put Exige throttle bodies on it..

(Looking for a set of them, see classifieds!)

Some advice on this would be good..

What injectors, Exige or ive heard Rover coupe turbo..!?
Management- im guessing Emerald or the like..
Exactly what do i all need, bodies with all associated parts, filter..
What about cold air enclosed box, where do i get one of them from? They come standard?

Thanks in advance :P

Mr Shug has Jenvy's on a VVC, very, very nice setup. Needed a bit of clever thinking on wiring looms and on ECU, emerald did a fair bit of work too.

PM Him as Andy G keeps him locked in a cupboard to stop him getting out.

I haven't checked, but im sure Emerald have a convertor plug from the 2 MEM's plugs straight to the Emerald ECU- so its plug and play. Obviously needing mapped..

Perhap's it was difficult for him as the Jenvey's dont come standard on a K-series!

Ill find him and PM him, see what the story is!

Thanks.

Isn't this car really a Rover-powered Rover??

By the time you fit bodies, Emerald etc, you're looking at a good few grand.

My question would be - is it worth it?

(I have a Saxo for a track car and have decided that it's really not worth spending that much on it - law of diminishing returns. eg A slip diff is the guts of a grand to fit. My car's scarcely worth a grand)

These part's can be had second hand, hence me having a classified for them.

Im not buying them new, so it wont be a few grand.

Mapping will be the expensive part, and it'll be worth every penny when im out on track.

Ive just sold my last track project which was a Saxo 16v in a Citroen Ax, awesome for a 1600 with a few breathing mod's- weighing no more than a fag packet.

Might have seen it on Knockhill.

Now please, ive made my decision- so constructive advice please. :D

I think you'll find TB's go for alot more than you would hope, they are greatly in demand for Elises, catering-vans, metros, etc.

Do you have an emerald already? I wanted one but could not stomach the £600 price tag!

Good luck though!! :thumbsup

Tough. :)

You will be very lucky to find them 2nd hand for anything like decent money. Emerald will need upgraded if you get a 2nd hand one as it was relatively recently that VVC control was added. By all means look, you can get lucky, but don't let the TD season pass you by as you wait.

For the questions you actually asked:

For injectors, I'm using the standard VVC rail on the Jenveys, which works fine.

You can get a Pipercross foam filter that would work, or the Lotus one (pricey) Bernard Scouse (Auto Teknix) does a cold air box which works fine, but it's £350 last time I looked. Don't bother trying to find one of them 2nd hand either - I don't think I've ever seen one come up.

Linkages - dunno with the Exige setup, but the Jenveys can be operated directly from above, so all you need is a bracket to hold the throttle cable bolted onto the head.

A guy near me has a set of Exige bodies but getting a hold of him is a joke.

He's looking for £400 which i think is reasonable concidering you can pay half that for a decent induction kit plus i paid £100 just to get a 56mm turbo Throttle body!

As for the Emerald, second hand- as long as its serial number is 41272 or after it's only £30+vat to get it to the latest K3 spec..

Its not alot of money concidering the fun the car will be, i do know the price's of thing's.

So what set up are you running? Spec of engine and power?

:D

I have an as new Emerald upgraded to the K4 spec and more-or-less new Titan throttle bodies which will work in your track car I think - however, as both these pieces are as new, I don't think I'll be letting go of them at the sort of prices you're hoping for - get back to me in a few months if you've still not found anything ;-)

I don't think emerald have an 2x36 MEMS -> Emerald adapter as such - they just give you a new 36-way connector to fit onto your chopped up loom - it's not particularly hard though, provided you have a wiring diagram for your existing installation. (In fact, if you're careful you can replumb the existing cables by moving them from the old 2x36 connectors into a single 1x36 connector - the pins can be released from the housing easily enough with a small electrical screwdriver - patience is rewarded here!).

The titan's come with a foam filter that fits straight over the shortish trumpets; if you want longer trumpets or proper airbox you'll need to decide on clearance to bulkhead, or go for curved trumpets ...

Power-wise your original EU2 VVC made ~145BHP. With TB's and a bit of mapping you might make 165 but then you'll reach the limit of the exhaust manifold (been there on another car already).

Whatever you do, don't overrev it - the VVC mech doesn't like that much I think - stick <7,300.

Cheers,
Robin

PM me with the kind of money you have in mind! :-D

The engine is in and running with a bigger manifold and exhaust already, 56mm TB etc etc.. It'll be around 160bhp already.

Whilst its getting a makeover it'll be getting a piper exhaust cam and the 8degree dowel timing advance modification and maybe a skim to raise the CR..

Yeh your right, i spoke to Emerald who said the dont do a conversion plug but supply one to be wired in.

Your idea sounds good- removing the old ins and putting them into the new plug! Noted.. :P
