Replacing S1 Steering Rack

Just failed a pre-MOT check with a worn steering rack. Anybody changed this/had it changed? Is it a big job?
Got until March to get it sorted - only really noticeable under hard cornering but enough to fail the test...

Just got my car back today...
Dropped it off at the garage on monday, rack off, sent down south to be refurbished, back up yesterday, and finished refitting and geo today.
£111 inc VAT for the rack and 4 hours labour thereafter..

Not desparately diffcult - can be a bit of a fiddle if it gets caught up on things in the tunnel it's housed in (not everyones does) but a bit of liberal swearing should sort it.

I've a pet mechanic I'll get to fit it for me so that's no issue
I guess there's no downside to using refurb'd instead of buying new? Does anyone have a name of someone who does the refurbing?
Also, noticed on Eliseparts that there are shims for fitting on the rack if using with lowered suspension. Are these strictly necessary or is it a bit of a 'in a perfect world' fix. The fact that the rack was fine until I lowered the car worries me a little...

Well, I've been running about for years with a standard height rack and 110mm front ride height. I find it fine, but there are those who hate the bump steer - have actually just had a conversation through the Yahoo group about this.
Certainly wouldn't damage the rack. It's one of those things that gradually creeps up on you, till it goes over the point where it'll fail an MOT. It might actually only need an adjustment (which would still need a re-furb guy)
As for contact numbers - never done it, so don't have any. Pretty sure Stephen knows a good one, but he's on holiday - Mac, you know any?

The company that does cheap refurbs are called M and P steering. If you do a Seloc search the adress and more info will be available....

There's a vauge recollection about somewhere called West of Scotland or something based in Springburn but nothing more than that.

Steering rack services is the place.
They are in port dundas in glasgow
