Fuel pump ticking....

Post by Tom » Thu Nov 15, 2007 9:05 am

The other day a ticking noise started from behind the passenger seat. Ticking gets quicker as the revs. increase, so am assuming it's the fuel pump.

Anyone experienced this? Any reason it should start when quiet before..(ie is it on the way out?)??

Fuel pump should be a constant drone, it only pushes fuel against the fuel pressure regulator so should not speed up or slow down.

Are you sure its not the Carbon Cannister solenoid? Sounds worse in winter for some reason. Should be a constant ticking when under power and silent at tickover. (Well mine is anyway) shouldn't change with revs.

I think I might have this also. Just started last night. Is it intermittant?
Sounds almost like the tappets or something?

I rev'd the arse off it however and it disappeared! :)

Mine only ticks under power, at idle and just above it's silent. it also doesn't start until the thermostat opens.

Now I've discovered a new noise, and I'm not sure if it's related. When I switch the engine off, it stops as usual, but then for about 5-10 seconds after engine stop, there's a very odd groaning noise (can't think how else to describe it). Kind of a shuddering groan that dies away after maybe 10 seconds......

any ideas??
