Just incase anyone else is away to try this job and only has half an idea what they're doing like me.

book says remove matrix assy and fan in one piece then split, replace fan and refit.

I didn't want to fanny about with the coolant so did it a bit differently....

1) remove radiator cowel
2) remove battery
3) unplug fan.
4) undo 4-off fixing bolts (1-matrix & 3-fan)
5) Split fan from matrix in situ. (see note)
6) lift & shift bottom of matrix accross to battery side and up slightly while leaving hoses and hot / cold control flap control cable connected.
7) Pass fan under matrix into space where battery goes and then remove.
8 reverese above to fit new one.

Note: book shows a rubber strap holding matrix & fan together whereas mine was bolted together with little nuts & brackets (I think only earlier cars have the strap).
You can't reach the bottom bracket with the matrix in situ so I burst the little bracket off and put it all back together with a big jubilee clip (draper sell a coil of band and ends so you can make it as long as you want) & it all feels solid enough. It's only to hold it together while replacing the fixing bolts really.

My back and the back of my knees hurt....

Oh...and I finally cut 2" off my 13mm combi spanner (I'm now getting far fewer sparks when undoing the battery post clamps)

that is all.
