Steering Rack

Post by craigs135s » Thu Dec 06, 2007 9:34 pm

Car was with Ali today to get serviced (Cheers Ali) and it needs a new Rack. Don't realy want to get a new one. Was someone talking about a re-con one? If so where and how much.

Cheers

You'll not really be able to tell until it's removed TBH. Check through your receipts to see if it's been replaced in the past (as Nizzy's was) as S1's should be Titan. Titan will re-con a rack for not a lot of money, or DIY the parts are very cheap.

oh no I have become a steering rack expert :(

That is indeed a titan rack and it can be fully reconed sped up slowed down whatever you like, they do seem to be made from butter as they wear frequently. and thats why Lotus have changed to a Sona rack but you cant get bit's for it :(

anyway if thats the rack you have you can buy all the parts for it £80-90 gets you all the bit's if your up for some spanner work or know someone who is.

Just a thought, but are exige racks the same as an S1 elise. if it was made in 2001, then it could be an S2 part.

i am just speculating here, incase it hasnt been thought about, i dont actually know the answer.

P.s i have a rack in my garage that you could use as a spare to get reconned to save your car being off the road

why not ? once done you won't have to do them again for ages I took the opinion if it's a wear part and it's off it's getting replaced/improved but I did go OTT and thats why it's still not fixed.

Early s2 racks are the same as s1 titan racks so Exige ones, even late ones should still be Titan IIRC

I'm about to DIY re-furb mine to a quick rack, to the way the Elise was originally meant to be - in a belated / nervous (lol) response to mckeann's - "learn how to turn the wheel properly".. tell that to every professional race car driver ever, not to mention F1 etc etc ;)

Best replacing TRE's (from TADTS) and rubber gators (from Titan - cheapest and best or so I've heard).

I'm even wondering if it'd be a good time to replace the heater matrix.

P.S. there are very detailed DIY instructions on Selock (on their Wiki and if you need more a search on the forum will find you all you need) of tips on not only removing the rack but how to mark your TRE's to keep you on the road comfortably till ur next geo.

P.P.S. you're best calling Titan rather than emailing them.
