S2 Heater Fan

Post by Blaque » Tue Jan 22, 2008 9:57 am

S2 Elise MY04 53 Plate 111s

Got into car last night after work, and no heater fan on 1, 2 or 3. Made for an interesting drive home. Heater still working as window started to clear once the car had warmed up.

I'm hoping it's the fuse (check under pax side front inspection grill, No. 14. Right?) but everything frozen solid at the moment so can't do right now. If it's not, and it's the resistor pack what's the possible chances of getting it done through AA Parts & Labour? Any experience?

Should be a warranty item on a new car.

But IIRC the AA parts & labour warranty is all about breaking down, not any old failure on your car - best ask the AA to clear that up first *before* starting any work, because if it ain't a warranty job, you probably won't want to pay the dealer rates for the job.

When it's in bits, drill in the drain holes so that it doesn't all go pop again - I *might* be able to repair your old resistor pack if that's all that's wrong with it - not looked at one yet, but as they say, "how hard can it be".

Cheers,
Robin

Thought I might be chancing my arm there.

Will check the fuse first (once the cars thawed out).

Warranty is good until June, but having read through, it mentions exemptions for water ingress, frost, and parts that may fail as a result of inherent design fault. Just about covers all angles on the heater fan then

If it aint under warranty then you are looking at a bill of around £650-700 from a Lotus (cough -MMC) dealer.

Hi Blaque. it sounds as though your resistor has packed in. Not sure with the age of the car whether it would be warranty - unless you have an extended one- When you get your car looked at and if it is the resistor then get the new revised resistor kit for it. The new pack mounts the resistor inside the heater box and prevents anymore water getting to it as it is better protected. And as robin says drill the holes and that will stop the build up of water in that area. I think there is only around £50 of a difference between getting just the resistor and the pack so the pack is well worth getting and will save you future problems.

Have tried that before, but the rest of the car, and indeed myself didn't get away to lightly either.

I trust yours is getting sorted out. X-fingers for you.

Will get a chance to look at the fuse at lunch time. If not that, then will try the warranty people.

Got a independant price of just over 1/2 of what MMC would charge. Also mentioned swapping the radiator for the ali one, and a s/s tow bar while the clam is off.

Will let you know the out come after lunch

Blaque Glad you got your heater sorted out.

I'm just waiting for the front clam to be delivered as it is on back order with Lotus. Can't wait to get my car back.

Slight thread drift/

Is the AA breakdown thing any good? Already having Roadside Assistance with them, I've just signed up for their breakdown warranty today (£65 until Nov) and thought it seemed a decent price... but obviously have no experience of how hard it is to claim (do you actually need to have broken down and called the AA man out before you can claim)? I can see what it covers (£500 less £25 admin fee, up to 5 claims etc)... but just wondered whether they are easy to deal with?

I did have the years warranty that I got for buying a Lotus Approved car, but it ran out about a week ago. I was thinking about renewing it (around £500). Although I did have to use it for the fan/radiator recently I did hear that the underwriters can be a complete PITA with their get-out clauses (ie, my fan seized... caused the radiator to blow because it got too hot... there is a consequential damage clause that means that they can possibly get away with replacing the fan, but not the radiator as it was consequential. I think Bill managed to get round it by doing 2 seperate claims). These clauses, and the fact that you can void the cover by getting services done at non-Lotus places are what put me off renewing the official Lotus cover. Makes you wonder how any HGF gets fixed under warranty as I thought many of them can be down to water pump failures etc...

So, I'm now winging it with the AA warranty which leaves me open to use Ali for servicing... hoping someone has got good feedback on the AA.

EDITED: Must add that MMC were very good with my troubles. They dealt with me phoning them in a panic on a Friday evening, dealt with the warranty people, and although the fan was delayed from Lotus, they had it fixed within 2 days of the parts arriving. It's purely the 'approved warranty' I'm not keen on.
