front number plate

Post by phraze » Wed Feb 27, 2008 4:05 pm

bugger a bloody pot hole in glasgow made the road eat my number plate!
one side is hanging down with the screw having pulled itself completely out of where it goes in the clam.
I cannae screw it back in 'cos the hole has threaded though...
There doesn't appear to be any cracks or anything though!
Might have to unscrew the otherside and keep the number plate in the cabin for getting home to Edinburgh tonight.

Any advice?

One of the few genuine "it fell off, officer" SE'ers? Throw it in the boot.

(FWIW, run for 3 years without a front plate on my S1 and, touch wood, not had an issue)

Yup, Some people tend to put them on with double sided sticky tape to avoid cracking the clam when this kind of thing happens. I've been waiting many many months for my tape to arrive due to supplier difficulties ;)

I managed to pull mine off while parking  (it was just stuck on not screwed). I just went to Halfords to get the adhesive strips and stuck it back on, possibley over-priced but got the job done.

Wee blob of sealant glue on the screw and when it's tacky, put it back into the hole - you may have to prop something up against it until it sets (that's how mine is held on after I ripped one side off on a kerb)

I'm another for the halfrawds sticky pads. Put plates on Erica's mx5 6 or so months ago, the car does Dundee > Kinross > Dundee everyday in all weathers and they've not come off, in fact the pads have outlived the number plate cos it has a nice spider crack on it from motorway stones... ;)

Worth trying Scotrad on Gorgie Road for plates. They are in some small industrial units next to the VW garage (used to be Sloans, don't know what it's called these days) Huge selection of plates, any shape, size, font, border, etc that you like.

Cheaper and better than Halfrauds and no documents required although I would take them along just in case :thumbsup

Buy yourself a private reg number, so you can cut it short !
and it doesn't hang over.

Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'

Hasnt it been stationary for most of that?!?!?

But seriously, dont bother replacing it until to are reminded by a BiB. Just make sure your tyres are legal etc etc

The clam, fair enough, the bloody plinth for the S1 costs summin like £110!!! A 'from lotus' only part

I spent a looooong time w/o a front plate cause I was pissed off paying £8 for a new plate. I lost 3 in the space of 6 months (I now avoid those streets in Dundee, ideally I could do the same to the whole fekin place..). Laziness and regular trips to Engerland have prevented me 'losing it' again.

If your after a new plate AVOID HALFORDS, because a) you'll be supporting an evil exploitative corporation, b) their plates have Halfrauds written on em. c) go to ur 'local boy racer type car shoppe' (Dundee's is on Cleppington Road) as they'll do any sort of plate you want.

My personal design is -
Completely legally sized plate & lettering design and spacing.... but nothing else..

No British Standard number nor number plate manufacturer printed on it. England has different laws for plates and I have decided they don't apply to us / me :thumbsup
