Post by Jamie84 » Sat Mar 22, 2008 10:25 am

I understand there is meant to be a certain torque wheel nuts are set too but is this really essential ?

i dont have a torque wrench , i am gonna take the wheels off today , can I simply nip them up tight tight and all will be fine ?

thanks.

do not "nip" them up I use a 24" breaking bar and I tighten until I lift the wheel off the ground, probably to tight but If I ever have to change the wheel again I will use the same breaking bar as the elise doesn't have a sh1t oem wheel brace.

Studs on my S1 (yours uses bolts and to a higher torque) did end up snapping (on a run) after years of just cranking them up and saying "that'll do" Don't imagine that'll be an issue with the bolts on the Exige - just be careful of stripping those facking splined nuts.

Screwfix and Machine Mart do cheapy torque wrenches for bobbins (under £15 IIRC) if you're considering having the wheels off and on a fair bit (know how you polishers like everything clean ;)) Needless to say, one lives in my boot now...

Check your studs - seriously. S1s are something like 85lb/ft which isn't all that tight and as I said, I've had two studs shear after years of yanking them up with a breaker bar...

At the very least, you'll have taken all the stretch out them, so they won't lock up properly...

wheel shouldnt really be on/off too much , but its is the spring clean this time :)

Think that concerns me is that i read in previous thread while back that the annoy wobble in steering wheel at 85-95 tuts can sometimes be caused by overtightening of nuts ?

If you're at all concerned, would make sense to trundle into Gt Western Road and grab a torque wrench out of Machine Mart for the price of a curry :thumbsup

Cheaper than? Halfords have a pro one, which is pretty decent, but also about £50 last time I looked. For wheel bolts, the MM one will do the trick and you won't be too pissed off if it gets left somewhere.
