heat soak / tufnol ?

Post by hiscot » Mon May 05, 2008 10:33 am

i use ptp t bods and have moved the air temp sensor from the side to the air filter plate as the ecu shows a huge increase in temp caused by heat soak
as i am doing a few mods and the car is off the road i think would like to insulate the t bods from the head and i am looking at tufnol as a spacer
has anyone used this type off stuff if so any advice on the best tufnol to use and at what thickness, it must also be petrol retardant and easy to cut / work with

I'd think any power gain due to increased charge density would be utterly tiny and a waste of time TBH. Don't see F1 cars with insulated TB's AFAIK...

hi shug
have you seen the air temp sensor rise with heat soak hence changing the fueling to suit the heat soak not the real figures
i relocated the sensor to the backplate and insulated it by mounting it into rubber
however the t bods do get quite hot and tufnol have just got back with a product quote we have a suitable product that has been used for simalar applications they sent a pdf and recomended where to get it from in such a small size
i can put the air temp back into the bod and use the backplate for an idle valve

Okay - so it'll help your sensor placement, but I can't imagine that you'll het horrific transfer of heat from the, what, 4" of metal in the TB that the air will rush past at velocity? Yeah, at low revs, it might transfer more. Seems a lot of work for a metro engine...

Still, your time and money and theoretical gains are gains as well, so who am I to question?

I don't know what ECU you are using but my bargin basement Megasquirt has a function that compensates for heatsoak, it uses some function of the clt and time since start.

Could you also just place the IAT sensor away from the inlet alltogether in the pre throttle inlet tract or somewhere else even? IAT should be pretty much ambient anyway unless you have a Supercharger...
