S1 Boot lid jammed shut

Post by MRpunchinella » Tue Jun 10, 2008 11:48 am

Release cable totally died at KH on Sunday. Pulled wheel arch liner to the side and pulled cable to release - no probs.

Went to check water etc last night and - nothing  usual tricks of bumping, thumping and pulling cable from wheel arch - nada.

Any help? If it meand cutting in behind the number plate; so be it. Going away this weekend so need access asap.

If I can do anything without cutting in - what should I be doing?

If i do cut in - how do i open the catch? is there a particular trick or place to use a screwdriver etc?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated :thumbsup

Can you get to the cable underneath the wheel arch liner ? just pull harder, or cut the sleeve so that you are pulling the cable and not just having the sleeve slide on it.

holes in the back is a last resort

I'll bet that the cable inner has come away from the release mechanism. If you are sufficiently violent you can bend up the boot lid, wedge something under it and then reach the release catch with your hand; if it's an alloy boot lid it will bend when you do this, so you'll need to straighten it out and it will never be perfect; if it's the glass fibre variant it will flex but should survive to spring back to original shape.

TBH, removing rear number plate and cutting through with a hole saw big enough to get your hand (or some person with small hands hand) through is less likely to destroy something (beyond the obvious hole behind the plate.

I have had the same on both cars, and N3 is being a bugger at the moment, but that is because the cable outer is not locating properly into the slot, and is the opposite way round because it is LHD.

If the inner cable wire has become unattached or broken then you would be able to pull it right through. If you still have the 15mm movement of the handle, then it may not be pulling the latch away enough from the plunger.

Have you tried it with two of you, one pulling the handle and the other pushing down on the rear of the boot lid, or about 6" forward. Also try pulling the handle whilst pushing the lid from side to side.

If no go, then look at the hole in the shell.

Fixed :thumbsup

As I said, located the cable etc no probs at the start of the week, just felt like there was no play at all. I got onto the inner cable wire as suggested and pulled on that whilst reaching up (stretch armstrong stylee) and 'proinged' (?)the lid up with a screwdriver. No damage.

Im going to make a permanent fix hopefully over the weekend.

Thanks to all
