how do i get the brake disc sheild off without damaging hub

Post by r055 » Tue Jun 17, 2008 3:17 pm

Not moved my car since Tut's tracknight as my Front pax splash guard/ heat shield is rubbing against the inside of my brake disc.

When i got round to changing the ball joints prior to the track session, the two allen screws were 'rounded' meaning that i couldnt get it off, so i just bent it out the way to get access. however puting it back on and trying to shape it flat again was a total PITA.

So...
whats the best way to get these screws out? drilling?
and can the car run (long-term) without these metal bits ? I run MMC discs if that makes any difference.

Drill em out.

If you run the MMCs in the wet, remember they will be even worse on initial application without the splash guard, but you'll be used to them by now, I'd wager.

Left handed drill bit :thumbsup

Will both drill them out and if it bites it will unscrew them as well.

Try J&L industrial supply, don't know if they sell to the public though.

Bear in mind these are really small screws and are mild steel. The surrounding hub, on the S1 at least is alloy. It's very easy for the drill to slip off and drill into the alloy. Alternative is to grind of the heads and re-drill and tap fresh holes on the same web but slightly higher up. They are not very deep and shouldn't affect the strength of the hub in the slightest.
