A tyre pressure gauge and pyrometer is much cheaper and probably more reliable . If I am not mistaken you want to know tyre temperature across the tyre surface .

I need convincing .

Air temp is pretty irrelevant you want to know temps across the tyre surface as in inside edge, middle and outer edge this gives you a clue as to how your tyre is gripping the track.

If your inside edge is way hotter then the outside edge then for some reason the inside is doing more work then the rest of the tyre
Landrover 90 = Muddy shed spec
Fiat panda = Couldn't care less spec
Landrover ?? = Muddy shrek spec
Unimog 404S = Very slow silly offroader spec
Kubota F1900 = Snowplough spec

with enough data gleamed from this you can start adjusting camber/pressures to suit different tracks so that you get an even temp across the tyre, this shows that all the tyre is being used in the most efficent manor.
