Rear Brake caliper

Post by Stephen » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:59 am

Hi all,
Probably one for Robin,
I am still having trouble with the drivers side rear caliper on the car. The handbrake actuating lever can be rotated through 360 degrees and only sometinnes catches meaning that the handbrake does not always work.
I don't know if this could be resolved by screwing the pot back with the proper tool rather than with just a pair of long nosed pliers or whether the thing is bust / needing a refurb.
Has anyone else been able to resolve this problem?
Does anyone have a spare caliper that I can attempt to refurbish so as to not have the car off the road for too long?

Help / Cheers.

I have a known good, rear drivers side caliper that you're welcome to borrow until you can get yours refurbed if you like?

Refurb process is in the SELC*CK tech wiki. May need a big press though :?

Thanks Rich,
I spotted it.
My real confusion is to why the actuating lever is now at times spinning freely without me first having tampered with things. The gubbins looks to be ball bearings etc so no right angles or teeth to wear. Also the gubbins is in the fluid so it should be well lubricated etc.
Maybe the "big circlip" mentioned has come adrift and i should try pressing the pot back in a press before I strip the thing?
I'm also a wee bit confused re the position of the leaver, doest this have to be in a particular position or do you have the choice of three (seems to be three ball bearings) with the leaver stopping when the pads become tight?

Any thoughts??

laguna calipers are different i think. Pentland Components sell refurbed Lotus ones for £100 ish. I'm prob going to get one in the not too distant due to seized nipple...

Drill the nipple then flush with loads of fluid, re-tap it with a greased tap to catch the swarf.

Jobs a carrot :thumbsup

If you drill it with a left handed drill it may even come out of it's own accord.
Laguna calipers are simmilar but different.
Elise parts do a seal kit for £28.
