Starting Problem

Post by s29ttc » Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:55 pm

I have had problems starting the elise randomly. For instance it sat since I came in from work last night and started this morning first time. TOday after work it just didnt want to start. It is turning over strongly and wanting to start. Gave it some gas and everything it doesnt start. Done this on Tues after work too but a quick push it start hesitantly mabye bearing sitting at 500rpm and hold the gas eventually it catches and goes once heated it feels like its running fine to me. Then you can switch it off and switch it on its brilliant. When it is on idle it seems to vary a little sitting at 1200 when its cold and eventually it drops down to 900. It was meantioned it could be the idle control valve been stuck with carbon so took that out tuesday and mate took it apart. On the ignition it moves in and out so seems to be working. Cleaned it up and poped it all back in but problem reoccured today. It really has only started this since I poped on the manifold and o2 sensor and cleaned up the spark plugs. It did need bumped to start it and again the next morning. That was a week ago though now tuesday was first it came back. I thought mabye one of the spark plugs may be dodgy but why would it start up and seemly run fine after and start. Anyone any ideas? Faulty idle control valve etc?

Try an ECU reset - someone will be along to explain it as I can't remember the exact process.

Pretty sure it's got something to do with sacrificing a virgin, which might be trick finding one in Bellshill.

Just talking about that funny you should say that. My mate was like you changed the lambda and few things, the throttle body has been changed etc why don't you reset your ecu. I know with some cars its unplug the battery for 10mins guess it aint that simple. Chances of a virgin in Bellshill pffffft :D

Well there's you for a start (we all know Holly's your sister) but that might the rest of the process a bit more tricky.

"Press and hold the reset button on the side of the steering column (next to ignition)

At the same time turn the electrics on (but don't start the engine), the speedo should then go back to zero

or

Turn the ignition on (first position) but dont start the engine.
As the needles do their "reset thing", press the throttle pedal a couple of times and switch the ignition back off. "

????????????????????

Think thats just the IAVC it resets

Open all the doors and the bonnet
Turn the key to in between off and elsectric on
shut the doors/bonnets one at a time within 5 secs or so (It helps to have assistance)
Then hold the rest plip for 65 seconds.

No - that's pretty much it, except you have to give the car 5 full depression of the throttle pedal before shutting the doors.

The reason they added the door shutting bit is to make sure that folk didn't accidentally do this whilst driving (there was a case of someone who hadnt notice the car had stalled and was jumping up and down on the throttle pedal - when they realised the engine had stopped they restarted the car and it went into "learn" mode almost causing a huge pile up behind.

Don't forget to tell your insurance co that you have reset it, all the factory stuff will have been wiped and if they scan the ECU they will see you have been playing...

Macs answer is right. Believe it or not.

Electrics on, gas pedal to the floor 5 times or more, electrics off.

ECU reset.

Now do you trust me...
