Does anybody know of any good books that explains how suspension works? What I'm after is something that goes from the basics up to something more detailed, like how to set up a race/competition car? I just know the pure basics but would like to get to know more about it.

The Carrol Smith range of books are very good. I think better than the Staniforth book.

Obviously I have them all and a few other wierd and wonderfull publications.

If you still want a book then go for "Tune to win" or "Drive to win" by Carrol Smith.

I can't remember which of the two came first but the second book covers what was in the first and then expands on the "guide" which is the best bit of the book.
