***ing Locking Wheelnuts (NLC - Merc)

Post by Shug » Mon Oct 20, 2008 9:58 am

Right, end of tether time. Need to get wheels off Merc for new tyres, before MOTing, but somebody (not pointing at my father) has lost the locking wheelnut key. No note of the code on it either :chainsaw

Normally, you'd hammer on a socket and twist them off, but these are cunning Trilock ones with rotating sleeves, so you can't do that. Piccie:

Any bright ideas (the well is too deep to get in and weld anything on) before the drills have to come out? Not that keen on drilling, as I'm fecking lazy and it'll take hours

How about a Gatorgrip universal socket? The pins should retract apart from the ones you need for the three holes :?

If you had a narrow sharp chisel you could probably cut through the spinning barrel - it cannot be very big/tough.

Agreed that drilling will be a PITA .. not sure what else to suggest, though.

Cheers,

How about grind a socket that is the same size as the centre circumference of the three holes to end up with a three point castellated (sp?) socket that will pop in the holes. Might not be very strong but better than drilling.

Nizzy has offered the remover tool that sounds like exactly the sort of WMD required. Top stuff - cheers lads. :thumbsup

Had thought about a gator grip (although had forgotten the name of it!) hoping someone would suggest and remind me of the name! The one that Niz has is much more vicious though and gets past the spinning collar issue.

Thanks Phil - Merc fitment? I suppose they are worth it for a set of Merc alloys - especially as it gets parked in some nice areas sometimes

A hammer and a 17mm socket works with these by the way, not that I'm a criminal or anything, just had the same problem a while back.... 17mm socket squashes the rotating collar against the stud.... :thumbsup

Tried that mate and they still span like buggery - mine must be done up tighter/verging on seized.

I thought it was too easy, when I hammered on the socket and within a wee shove, it was moving quite easily (although not feeling like it was spinning) I got the message 5 minutes later when I was still trying to undo it.... :tard

Happened to Hollys corsa. I just hammered the big washer off and took the wheel off along with the hub of the brake drum . 4 hours later with use of drills, chisels and angle grinders seemed to work. I think in the end the heat helped to get it off. I done the exact same thing big 17mm socket hammered it on top and after about 10 mins of easy turning I thought mmmmmm that should be off now. The only other thing I woudl suggest is trying to make the key yourself if its not to hard. If not the 3 p's (persistance, patience, persiverance) you will get it eventually.
