Rear suspension squeak

Post by alicrozier » Sat Nov 15, 2008 6:15 pm

Squeak developed this week from the offside rear (and latterly also the nearside although not as loud). I thought the worst, Ohlins or maybe toelinks/bushes...

Nothing obvious from the damper so I took the wheels off, turned out it was coming from the spring rubbing on the plastic sleeve of the damper. There were quite obvious vertical scores on the plastic. Anyway, gave the springs and sleeves a quick clean (they were manky) and applied a little dry lube to the sleeve.

Mouse has now left my wheelarch. :thumbsup

Ali,
I've got a similar problem with my 2001 S2.
They back shockers squeak & make a knocking noise - but only really when the car is very hot - been running for about an hour.
and more noticeable when the car is going slow - ie. 5mph, in a carpark, parking it.
Ally reckons its the shockers need replacing.
I thought it was the metal cooling pipes that run up the chasis legs - worn rubbers & knocking off the chasis. - apparently not.

Was this the same symptons? - (after an hour)

David
Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'

pete had the exact same problem. He had a leaky shock, replaced the pair and all is well. I am sure he will be along later to wax lyrical about how he did the job himself and how well it worked :D

Order the bolts while you are at it as you don't want to feck one and end up waiting an age for new ones (they are cheap as chips) you will need someone to swop the springs over too, most local garages will do it. you could buy a spring compressor but make sure they fit the smaller dia springs as you really don't one going off in your face.

I've shopped about for 2 x brand new straight replacements.
Beleive it or not, Murray Motors are the cheapest.
Not sure if Darren has given me a Scottish Elises discount ?
He wants £109 each for the S2 rears 9K series)
Eliseparts.com are £7 more - each
