How to tell Rover or Toyota engine.

Hello all,

I am looking for an Elise and currently doing my research. I want an Elise, around 2003 - 2005 around £12000-15000, Yellow or Dark grey probably.

When searching autotrader they don't seem to advertise if it is toyota powered or rover, 5 or 6 speed , 156 or 192 bhp the main tell tail signs.

Do the position of exhausts pipes give it away? 1 each side of rear number plate is rover and twin below the number plate is Toyota?

I have seen 03/04/05 that are Rover engines but I thought Toyota was introduced in 04?

Correct

They were selling the 111S model (Rover) alongside the 111R model (Toyota) for some time before the 'S' (Toyota) entry level model came in.

Thankyou kinds sirs, I will go look a little further. I fancy getting the Toyota power one but not too fussed.

Yota is a good call - especially for the money you can pick one up for currently...

Yup, easiest way to tell

Also, from the front you can check the grill/service panels in pictures. Rover has a thicker/deaper middle spar. Toyota as a much thinner one that goes over the grills.

Anything Pre-06 that was not a 111R is a Rover K
Post 06 Elise S or R are both Yotas

Get yourself a cheap 111R

There was a rover powered Elise S (same spec as 111S but non-vvc i.e. 120bhp) that was sold at the same time as the rover powered 111 and 111S and just to confuse things some people have retro fitted the rover style exhausts to toyota cars so it ain't that simple sadly

OK, I am starting to get the hang of this ......oh no I am not.

So you can get a 53 111r toyota but a 111s upto 06 is likly to be rover but an 04 (or 53 - the example you posted) 111r will be toyota.

So now I am looking for 2004 111r in Storm.....simple but not until Mid March.

Make your life simple, buy an S1. In standard form they are all Rovers
