NLC Focus TDCi vibration

Post by tuscan_thunder » Tue Jan 20, 2009 11:21 am

Father in law bought a Focus tdci last week, at auction and it was cheap. It has a bad vibration (shakes the car) at idle and through the rev range.

He's changed the engine mounts, but no difference.

The sound/vibration changes slightly when the clutch is disengaged.

We suspect it will be a combination of the thrust bearing and the double-mass flywheel (this seems to be a likely cause).

The first day he had it, the starter motor stuck disengaged and this ties in with the double mass flywheel disintegrating and filling the starter with bits of metal.

Anyone any experience with these cars/this problem before he spends a few hundred quid on a flywheel (and, to be sensible, clutch) only to find that's not the problem?

Can't help you on this particular problem, but I have always found http://www.ffoc.co.uk to be a mine of useful info on the very rare occasions I have had issues with my Focus. I might be worth registering and asking the question there - they are always very friendly and heplful.
