Traction Control
Traction Control
So, after visiting Murrays the other day, i mentioned to Graeme that one thing that i would have liked on the Exige was Traction Control for those wet/damp days. Apparently this can be added quite easily, just a case of sending the ECU to Lotus for programming and fitting the button in the car. Car would be away for a week or so, which is not really a problem to me.
Can the people who have experienced these cars with and without Traction Control advise whether it would be worth while or not?

Re: Traction Control
Peter,
My car has it and very much worthwhile. On the road it makes slippery low speed stuff more idiot proof (I also have an LSD though which seems to lessen how an how much it cuts in). It's not too nannying either, (on track) in either wet or dry conditions the car can be driven on the traction control allowing a small degree of drift. It's switchable so you can always switch it off but you never really need too and won't be any quicker (good for hooning and showboating).
Not a stability system though, it won't stop a spin if you go in too hot...
Just let me know if you want a demo in my Exige.
Some more info here, page 10:

I assume this retrofit is just the LTC (Traction Control) and not the LVTC (Variable Traction Control). LVTC wound be a nice retrofit option...?
Cheers,
Ali

Re: Traction Control
Price...?
I know there is an aftermarket kit that would set you back aroud 800 all in...
I'm also interested!

Re: Traction Control
My last 111R had TC and at the time of purchase I really didn't see ther point, but I did find that I quite liked the security of having it there,
,It isn't too intrusive and you can still get the back end out a bit with it switched on if you are steering into the slide, and it does pop and bang a bit when it cuts in
What you must remember though is that if you lift off at all you are in control, as the TC can do nothing, so it isn't a get out of jail free card.

Another option....
Bogie on SELOC got this fitted to his SCed Honda S2 with great success
http://www.racelogic.co.uk/?show=Tracti ... l_Adjuster
What he said
"With the digital adjuster, their traction and launch control system is better than the factory one, infinitely adjustable and you can pre-program your preferences for different conditions then access just with touch on the in-dash adjuster
awesome bit of kit - I was losing loads of time in sprints at the launch, particularly in dodgy conditions. With the TC fitted, the first time I tried a 0-100mph launch and run in the wet (yes raining, with A048s on) I managed 0-60 in 3.9secs and 0-100mph in 10.5 ...in the wet, in a 330bhp Elise ....so yes, it works better than your right foot
For road use, well I guess it makes it a bit safer if you want to press on a bit, rather than driving like a granny in the wet - you can just floor it and let the TC take care of things for you if you are a lazy unskilled bugger
oh...its good fun for showboating too - just turn the dial to how much slip you want, put it sideways and keep the throttle in and hold whatever drift angle youve dialled in
any time you dont want it, just turn it to "off"
oh...im not normally a fan of nannying aids, especially when they intervene when you dont want them too, like a lot of modern cars "DSP" systems, but the Racelogic set-up is like a souped up version of what you get on a 2-11, its designed to make you go faster, extract the maximum performance out of the car for the conditions ..and I guess I was just starting to take the sprinting lark a little too seriously.....and had run out of other things to do to the Elise - hence I gave it a go ....glad I did, I would have it again if I had a 300bhp + Elise, just for the fun of it"

Re: Traction Control
I must say that having driven an SC S2 exige with TC (or is it really stability control ?) I would never use that kind of TC on track, it basically prevents you from setting the car up on entry to the corner by killing the power you need to control the rear of the car and causes the car to revert to it's natural understeer rather than the touch of oversteer I think you need to get the power on early . . . but on the road it's a no brainer, because there's normally nowhere to go and lots of things to hit . . . so anything that stops a mistake causing a crash has got to be a good thing . . .
I know a couple of people that use systems like the racelogic one, they all allow you to control the wheel slip percentage relative to the undriven wheel average speed, IIRC 10% in the dry and 5% in the wet are the ideal(ish) targets for maximum acceleration . . . as has been mentioned this is only a system to give you maximum acceleration and doesn't interfere with the car control techniques you do need to get cars to turn faster than the tyres would allow you to make it turn . . .

Re: Traction Control
The Lotus system is traction control not a stability control - it doesn't brake etc. Very similar to the Racelogic system (explanation is in the link I posted earlier).
It's actually fine on track Fergus, it does allow you to set the car up and apply enough power.

Re: Traction Control
Having not tracked the car (yet) i'm not too concerned about using TC on track at the moment, just really looking for something to aid driving when it's wet. I think i can balance the clutch and accelerator well enough in the dry that i would only have the TC switched on when it's wet. At least all the feedback points to 'yes, get it done'. As for price, i was given a rough idea but i think i'll give Murrays a shout and get a proper price as i don't want to mis-quote them. I'm pretty sure it's not going to be in the region of £800. I think it was about £300 as an option new.
I guess when i do get the car on track it will come in useful too?? Need to see what like it is to drive with first.
Ali - i may take you up on your offer. Thanks.
Will get back to you and see how you are fixed. (And yes, it is just LTC.)

Re: Traction Control
Lotus adjustable TC works pretty well on track I think, can set it so full throttle on exit gives a nice neat slide without having to worry about spinning due too excessive power o/s- makes an interesing noise too. Won't stop you spinning on trailing throttle on entry of course. And can always turn it off if nannying and talent masking is not yer thing.
