Victors Mutterings part 2

Post by Victor Meldrew » Fri Feb 06, 2009 2:09 am

From what I can gather from the sprint regulations , there is no real restriction on aerodynamics as long as it stays road legal. So front splitter, long rear diffuser and a rear wing of some type...

There appears to be three main types of rear wing for the S1..

1. The 160 style.
2. The basic bolt onto the clam style.
3. The "proper" lotus bolt on to the chassis style.

Does anyone on here have any experience of the proper chassis mounted wing...?

No, but I assume it'll be the only type that offers appreciable effect at most Sprint venues.

And even then it will be minimal. What sort of speeds do you get up to on the sprints and are there any fast (80mph+) bends? If not, I'd save my money for more important things.

:withstupid

The only difference I could feel between JJs car and mine was at above 120 tuts and when braking from that speed down to maybe 70.

In Scotland there are only three fast sprint venues, RAF Lossiemouth (which never ran last year and may not this year), East Fortune (which will not run this year) and Knockhill (which didn't run last year and I'm not sure about this year) . . . Lossie is fast but not really in the corners, East Fortune is fast, period and you know KH. None of the other sprint events, Alford, Boyndie, Golspie, Kames are either fast or fast in any corners . . . I'd have thought the drag and weight penalty would hugely outweigh any possible benefit . . . and if you look at all the road cars competing in A and B classes, really none have high performance wings fitted . . .

IIRC there are some regs relating to front wings/aerodynamics on road cars, something to do with the height relative to the wheel centers or such, best check the Blue Book - that a just be my memory getting old . . .

Aeordynamics start work from 0mph and start having noticeable effect from 40mph upwards....

However, I would suggest a reduction in drag and minimising lift would have the most noticeable effects rather than seeking downforce.

I did the 160 rear and extended diffuser thing last week but for aesthetics not performance enhancement as I'm a learner driver hahahaha...
