How much to replace a wheel bearing?
I've just forked out £148 to replace the front nearside bearing. I can't remember it being so expensive in the past and it was just my local garage that done the job. Thoughts?

Free ball-gag?
Have to think that's a bit of an ouch.. Parts cost is about £20. That means £128 in labour (and VAT, of course) to take off a wheel undo 4 (from memory) bolts - another 2 for the brake caliper, take off a circlip, press out one bearing and press the other one in. Then reassemble. Absolute worst case scenario, with garage tools, it's 2 hours. So £64 an hour labour?

"Garage tools" - never seen a spanner monkey waste more than 2 minutes on a seized bolt before the drill comes outrobin wrote:Plus two hours for every single bolt being seized if it's a sheddy old S1

Re: How much to replace a wheel bearing?
I think the last wheel bearing I bought nearly two years ago was £43. Also the job can be a PITA so £148 whilst not cheap could well be the true cost to the garage.

Was it Gold plated? Seriously though, anywhere with a trade account can get them for £20 - it's a standard Timken part number.Stewart wrote:I think the last wheel bearing I bought nearly two years ago was £43.

Re: How much to replace a wheel bearing?
I bought a bearing for about £20, stripped the hub off myself and my local garage pressed it for £10

Re: How much to replace a wheel bearing?
Thats not all that bad to be honest, I paid 25 for the bearing than took the hub to a garage to be be pressed in for 20.

Re: How much to replace a wheel bearing?
No prob with my two sheddies.
Lost count of the number of times that Robin has replaced my wheel bearings at the side of the road/Hotel car parks, in Spain/France/Switzerland/Austria/Italy etc, either pressed them out and in with his thumbs, or called a local yokel who turned up in his 2CV van, took the hub away, then returned before we had sunk a couple of beers and charged a few shekels.
Ball joints and suspension mounts even easier.
