Alarm/immobiliser/ignition problem ?

Post by Blaque » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:08 pm

2003 S2 Elise 111s

Went to go home tonight, walked up to the car, pressed the key fob and the central locking opened.
Got in, inserted key, turned one click. Cd player started, dash lights all came on.
Turned the key the rest of the way, and everything went off, no lights, no LCD, no ignition click.

Pressed the big fob button, armed light comes on, central locking makes a noise but doesn't lock.
Alarm gets armed, as it went off while I was fiddling.

Tried resync-ing the fob, and same again.
Run to Edinburgh and back yesterday, so I don't suspect the cars battery.

Going to go back up with the spare key just incase it's the battery in the fob, but anything else I should look for/try.

Cheers

If everything died when you turned to the run or start position your battery is not able to provide the current required and the voltage is dropping below the level that the equipment needs to run.

If you're alarm went off at the same time, it might well be because it thought somebody was trying to disconnect the battery prior to steeling it.

2003 car, original battery? Probably about right. But it could also be that the alternator isn't charging the battery ... Try jump starting it, then check the alternator is actually charging the battery, then take it from there.

Cheers,
Robin

Thank you for your advice Robin.

Nipped in to town at break time, and picked up a new battery. Fitted it in the works carpark this lunchtime. Started up first time.

Old battery is now on a charger, and will see if it can hold a charge once it's done. Don't want to find out it's the alternator miles from home.

Thanks again
