Radio/cd player

Post by ticktickboom » Sat Feb 28, 2009 4:28 pm

Thinking of upgrading my radio, jumps quite easily when playing cds and I drive mostly around town so this is too frequent! However I might just leave the radio and fit a cable for an iPod that I'd buy solely for the car.

Any advice on upgrade? And is fittig iPod cable straightforward?
Cheers

Make sure you buy a head unit with driect drive I-pod control or else you'll need to flick through every track to find the one you want... or just get an fm transmitter for your I-pod and you can change tracks on your I-pod and listen to them through your radio.... I have an fm transmitter and a pioneer head unit in the elise and it's great... In my borat I have a double din Kenwood dvd thingy with direct drive I-pod control and it rocks...

aye ive used transmitters in the past, but have got high pitcher whirring sound, some sort of engine interefence, cant remember the "science" behind it when it was explained to me! it was a cheapo piece of crap, are they really worth spending the hardcash on the expensive models?
cheers for the offer!

Alpine do some decent stuff that gives the direct IPod control. I had the iDA-X100 fitted in the Exige along with a (small) subwoofer behind the driver seat and the audio processor and bluetooth hands-free kit. Sound quality was excellent as the AP corrects for the acoustic deficiencies in the cockpit. Dead easy to fit. I've posted on here before on fitting the iPod cable so a quick search should turn that up.

There will generally be a few woofter comments made wrt the subwoofer et al but as I pointed out then I do like my creature comforts and a decent quality sound system is one of them.

Now got the iDA-X100 fitted to the m-in-law's MX5 but have the subwoofer, AP and bluetooth kit going spare if anyone is interested.

Cheers

No surprises there then! :finger

All the kit now in the classifieds section so all you need is a decent headunit (suggest the iDA-X305) and all my kit and you're sorted!

went to ray smith car solutions to have a look at their gear, they were giving me the pitch on apline head units and replacement front speakers (the rear would be mighty expensive they said as theyres very little space to work with).

anyone know of these new alpine units out that work with iphone , usb and bluetooth?

im considering the cde-104BTi - £360 fitted (including front speakers, midlevel hertz i think he said, more than what id need apparently)
or i might be silly and go up market with apline unit which have ditched the cdplayer - iDA-X305, its got a gucci LCD screen! hah! £500 fitted (+speakers)

both units have parrot bluetooth built in.
can anyone comment/criticise/recommend/offer alternative solutions?

cheers

If your able to fit the head unit yourself try googling it and save your self 200-250 beer tokens ...... if the head unit itself was on offer for 500 that is.

ray smith are selling the unit for £365 but ive found it going for £260 on the web.
im sure i could do the unit myself, but perhaps not the speakers, will look into it...if its all straight forward (and im sure dropping the ipod cable down under the dash is) then ill do the whole job myself.

anyone want a new multimedia system fitted? im sure i could put dvd player screens in the back of your head rests for a good price!

From what i remember from all those years ago the speakers will probably have push on crimp fittings so should really be just

1) remove old speaker
2) remove crimps from the back
3) push crimps onto new speaker
4) fit new speaker

or at least thats how i remeber it .... might be worth taking one of them off just to have a look in the back of it.

If it's an S1 then I thought there was a limit in the depth of headunit you can buy?

I fitted a Kenwood BT8041 to my S2, it's a good headunit and everything is in one box (The Alpine requires an extra bluetooth module). It plays from the Ipod but also you can plug memory cards straight into the USB interface to listen to MP3. It will stream bluetooth Audio and is also a handsfree carkit (parrot based but useless if out of town).

Veryeasy to fit and less than £150.

Cheers, Peter
