Post by vxc » Sun Mar 01, 2009 2:49 am

when going 80+ i seem to have a stronger vibration in steering wheel.

Brake fluid levels, but I think that is the prange ABS light that flashes?
A048's have done that with others, IIRC.

The light flashing is possibly the fluid level light - if it's easy to make it come on then disconnect the wire plug from the top of the brake fluid reservoir and see if the light still comes on when cornering.

If you've only had the wheels balanced once, I might be inclined to get the balance checked at another location - I've always found that CLCM in Edinburgh have done a good job (re)balancing wheels fitted elsewhere.

Once you're sure it's not wheel balance, the next likely problem is bushes, balljoints and bearings. You would need to go over the front suspension and steering rack with a fine toothed comb to see if there is any play.

Cheers,
Robin

Pretty much all A048s do that, and Id top up the brake fluid as said before.

I found that R888's do not have the same issues.

Better than the 48's but you can still get a little wobble.

As well as fluid check what life you have in the pads, that light comes on in mine if the pads are well worn even with topped up fluid.

Also considering 888s , post on seloc suggested there wasnt too much difference between them and 048s maybe a slightly softer sidewall and a little less sticky in dry . They are £200 cheaper , But do they look as good ?

same here my pagids are around 6mm.

dont think I'll be forkin out for rs42s again , I can notice a little more bite but not enough to justify the cost for road use.

The inside (i.e. what you cannot see from the street) will be worse than the outside. The rears are actually only half worn at 4-5mm as they start with only 9mm IIRC.

The fronts will be fine down to about 2mm then they'll start to wear rapidly in my experience, so keep an eye on them and change when you get to 2mm (but not before - RS42 are about 10 quid a mm for the fronts and more than that at the rear.

In note that Mintex1144 are 54+VAT on eliseparts (no doubt cheaper elsewhere) - if you don't do much track driving the 1144 is surely better value for money and just as good at stopping you on the road.

888's are excellent but although cheaper than 48's they wear a bit faster I think, particularly on a hot track (less of an issue if you tend to drive on Scotland's cold and wet roads a lot).

That said, assuming this is for an S2, the Pirelli P-Zero Nero that I've been using for the last 6 months are excellent and cost about 200 quid the complete set. Of course they're not as "cool" as R-tyres, but they're much better value for money and arguably more sensible choice for road driving (they're fine on track too, though not as grippy as the R tyres, obviously). Very good performance wet and dry (had them on a wet/snowy Oulton Park going very well indeed - passed loads of cars on 48's :-)).

Cheers,
Robin
