S2 Elise Brake surprise!

On the way to work yesterday I noticed a grinding noise coming from my nearside front wheel. When I parked I had a look around the car and saw that the pads were down to around 6mm on the front and around 5mm at the rear. At work I could really only check the outer pads and at this point I assumed that I had picked up a stone on the road. I ordered up a full set of yellowstuff pads to fit at the weekend in any case. On the way home tonight the grinding got too bad to leave to the weekend. I removed the front wheel and to my surprise discovered I had no inner pad. I had the metal but no brake pad.

I thought perhaps the outer piston had seized leaving all the braking to the inner pad. I took out the pads and found that the pistons were very free and slipped back into the caliper with very little force. So a seized caliper was unlikely to be the culprit.

Has anyone else come across extreme asymetric wear on their front brakes, or has the bonding compound let go completely and the friction pad dropped out ? There is absolutely no evidence of friction pad on the inner carrier at all.

Good effort , you have got full value for money out of your pads  . The inners do wear faster than the outers , sounds like you pad material has let go .
