Problem S2 Clarion CD Head Unit

On friday, went to start the car, first time in a few weeks, and the battery was dead as a dodo. Put a new battery in it 3 months ago, so back to Halfords for an exchange, no problems and job done, turned out to be a duff battery.
when i put the new battery in the following has happened, the cd player/radio is now jammed. when you put the face on, it lights up in the off position. when you turn it on, the light goes out, and the system appears to turn itself on. But no music plays. all the controls work etc, but no sound, and the blue back light is off. when you turn the system off, the back light turns on, and the system turns off.
Its the original Clarion DB318RB out of a 2002 S2 111's. I have checked the manual, and troubleshooting page, but this problem does not appear to be listed. i have tried resetting the system by pressing the reset button, but to no avail.
Don't really want to change the system if i can help it, and although the original is not great, it does me.
Any ideas? or should i just replace?
